Government Weighs Charges On UPI Payments Over Rs 3,000

What is the use of Taxes if not public benefit?

I wager the cost of per UPI transaction would be extremely miniscule.
Brain dead thinking. Govt covers cost of Note Printing, UPI would be fraction of that.

If we are talking about charging Merchants whose turnover is more than ₹ 50Cr, then it is alright. They already pay MDR to Visa- MasterCard.

@Abhishek012 your take on this?

I saw this article/news yesterday morning.

For the past 5 years, there have just been new dramas going on.

No one actually knows what the real MDR will be or who it will apply to.

Every few months, new opinions and rules are presented but nothing concrete ever comes out of it.

People are just wasting their time and energy.

That's why, only once MDR is actually imposed, then it’ll be worth talking about.

What’s the problem if some small charge is levied, like 10 paise per transaction up to 3k and then say Re 1 and so on? Why does everything have to be free? 10 paise won’t make any difference to even the poor but would add up to a decent amount for the banks that provide this service. If you pay someone Rs1230 and 1231.10 is deducted, most people wouldn’t even notice it.

When UPI was launched, from 2016 to 2019 — for a total of 4 years — MDR charges used to apply and still UPI kept growing.

There used to be a 0.1% MDR charge for transactions up to ₹2,000 and 0.25% MDR for transactions above ₹2,000.

Merchants had no problem with it.

But now, after making MDR free, merchants have gotten used to it in such a way that —

When RuPay Credit Card via UPI charges 1.25% to 2.25% MDR, they refuse to accept it. Yet they happily accept 3% to 3.5% MDR on Amex and Diners Club cards.

If you try to explain this, merchants say:

“RuPay Credit Card on UPI has charges imposed by the Indian government, that’s why we’ve disabled it.”

But when you ask them — “You're paying 3% to 3.5% MDR on Amex and Diners Club, what about that?” —

Then they themselves start explaining, “That’s charged by Amex and Diners Club companies, not by the government. 🤣🤣

Main toh cash me switch kar jaunga kyuki abhi cashback bhi chillar bhi na milta😆 😆. Product chahe kitna bhi price ka ho lekin platform fee delivery fee ye pay karne me accha nhi lagta. Chahe toh product price me include karde toh bhi chalega but no additional fees😆 😆

Amex aur diners club kitne logo ke pass hai ?

Rupay cc sabhi ke pass hoga to jyada transactions rupay cc se hi aayega .
Inme merchant ka loss hai

Amex aur diners club jo bhi use karega wo chota amount ke liye use nahi karega .
Merchant ko isse farak nii padega profit me adjust hojayega .

How can it be included in the price? Adding something small like 10 to 25 paise to the total amount deducted is the only way unless you want a service fee per month or per use. No one will switch to cash. Everything else toes up by much more and no one stops using those goods and services. Like, dosa goes up from Rs 150 to 170 (North Indian prices) and you still see people eating there. Banks impose SMS fees but you don’t have people closing accounts and so on.
