What’s that underdog card for you? For me it’s BOB Eterna

Base Reward Rate: 0.75%

Accelerated Reward Rate: 3.75% (capped at 5k pts/ month)

Ideal Spending / Month: 42,000 INR

It’ll qualify for annual milestones of 5 Lac & 50k for 20k pts &10k pts. It'll shoot the reward rate to 4.75 on annual spends of 5 Lac.

1RP= 25p as statement credit.

It has also joining fee waiver on 25k spends on first 60 days, which is amazing considering the value

Small AU LIT

Using 3 features

1. 5% CB for 300/qtr
2. 5% CB on grocery for 300/qtr
3. 10x rewards for 300/qtr

I use bigbasket thru tata neu for grocery which usually have 10% instant discount on AU CC.

So purchase of 2500 costs 2250.
+5% neu coins
+5% CB general
+5% CB on grocery
+10x rewards

End cost of grocery worth 2500 comes down to 1855. (over 25% discount)

My grocery purchase averages to more than 15k so i still end up with 20%+ discount saving me around 3k a month by spending 300+gst every month on enabling these features.

Apart from my primary card ( HDFC Infinia) I use other card for specific needs. It could be an Indus Ind eazydiner card for offers at restaurants, One card till someone worked for Big Basket instant discounts etc.

Yes Premia is the underdog for me.. when I got this card 4 years back, I never thought I would use this card. But every month I have been using it for a small amount of Rs.145 coz that’s the only card which gives discount on buying single ticket in BMS. 😊
You can try Indusind Easydinner as well which gives 200 of on single ticket as well.

HDFC Clubmiles has been the underdog for me.

4RP/150, convertible 1:1 to KrisFlyer. In my experience, some routes and flight dates have seen easily Rs 1.05/mile from KrisFlyer after accounting for taxes, so that is nearly 2.8% return on a "basic" card. Add in free stop-overs in a roundtrip booked on points that are usually a paid option if buying with cash or cash+points, it comes even closer to DCB/Infinia's base rate. Comes with 6 lounge accesses globally for main + add-on.

I used to make good use of 10X and 5X offers pre-covid, taking the reward rate even higher. These offers stopped at some point though, probably 2020.

Unfortunately the card is now phased out, so will probably receive some other card at renewal time.
