I am also surprised with someone even trying to compare German cars cost of ownership to Hyundai or Suzuki.
I have been driving for 20+ years, and have owned a whole lot of cars in multiple different countries where I have lived like India, US, Singapore, Australia
German cars are great while they are under warranty, once the warranty period is over, they are a nightmare to maintain as the spares are crazy expensive and very often difficult to get. This is also clearly reflected in the resale values of Toyota / Hyundai & Suzuki cars globally.
Its easy to say any mechanic with a scanner and good understanding of cars can troubleshoot a VW car, given India and it's road its easier said tham done.
In terms of automobile industry, we are light years behind the western markets. If you see any US highway today, you will rarely see any person with their hands on steering, the cars just drive themselves, roads are good and cars have way less stress on engines and breakdown less often.
Another tell tale sign is the industry which buys the most cars every year (car rental like Avis / Hertz etc) have completed moved away from German cars to Hyundai, Kia, Toyota & Nissan.
