Amex Plat Travel - No Retention Benefits Offered - July 2025

My Platnium Travel card has come up for renewal and accordingly Amex has charged the annual fee in tbr latest statement.

For the longest time I've seen people talk about the different kinds of offers they received when they called up Amex and ask for waiver.

So I called them up today and asked if they could give me an offer too. Do note I have Platinum and Gold charge cards besides the Travel card.

They flatly, although politely, refused to give me any offer. They say that such an offer is not available for my profile. I really do not want to pay the full fee, even though it's a very beneficial card, having just doled out almost 78k a few months ago for the charge card.

Has anybody else faced this? Were you able to talk with them and get them change their decision and give you an offer?

Would appreciate any inputs.

I closed platinum travel last month and they offered me spend based, partial fee refund don't remember the numbers. I still went ahead and closed

Mine is up for renewal as well, and i also hold the Platinum charge card. Believe it or not last year when i got my charge card i asked them to close it and they said you can keep it for free since you have the Platinum charge card, so i kept it. Now i saw the fee charged in my statement, i called them up and told what is this, you guys said i can keep it for no charge, and they said no it must have been a mistake we dont do that, i insisted on getting the recording since i am 101% sure they said it, but no use of course. So finally they waived the fee, given i have to spend 90k in next 3 months.

So I called them back.and asked them to cancel the card.

They just obliged and said 'Sure sir, we will'.

The fee charged will be reversed within 24-48 hrs. And I can proceed to make the payment for the statement amount minus the annual fee amount.

This is heights. I didn't expect this at all. After hearing all the stories for so long from almost everybody I took it for granted that if get an offer of some kind 🤣

Plat Travel is not complimentary for you with Plat Charge?

I think it's free for many.

I don't mind if I don't get it complimentary. Given how they've reacted in my case I wouldn't even expect it.

But I would have taken up any offer they might have given.

I seem to have somehow gotten the rawest deal of all 😪

You made the BIG mistake of paying them 77880 renewal fee for the charge card.
No one should pay this renewal fee, I mean NO ONE.

Now they know that you have money to throw, they will not give you any discount or fee waiver

Oh no. This is the first time I've had thr platinum charge. What I paid was the joining fee.

My case: 4 cards with Amex (2 Charge and 2 Credit). Called them a day before Gold Charge renewal date. First heaps of compliments for being a loyal customer for more than 10 years, always paying my bills on time and other usual amex stuff. Then the guy started on the benefits of gold charge card only to end with "But you also have plat charge, what more can I say.. Totally your call sir". I gave my nod to close the card and poof.. It was gone. Things have now changed with Amex for sure 😂

What's shocking was zero effort from their side to retain a customer. Not even mere words, let alone a offer.

I guess there's no such thing as retention team any more. As you said, 'what more can I say. Totally your call Sir' seems to be the new normal.

But I've seen people get offers very recently. So maybe they didn't like my spend pattern (it has been in the drawer after hitting the 4 lakh limit).

I think it's because of the plat charge card... But there could be more to it.
Funny cuz I was planning to get the amex trifecta, but they stopped issuing new cards during that time.

Lets see what the future holds now.
