SBI Savings A/C - PMJJBY unauthorised activation & cancellation

PMJJBY New

I have an SBI savings account. They (probably branch employees) activated PMJJBY without my consent. It resulted in a debit of ₹436.00.

Complained to the SBI customer care (screenshot attached), but they said to contact the branch.

Visited the branch the next day. They tried to convince me not to cancel the insurance that it's only a small amount deducted every year. On insisting on cancellation, I was told to submit an application for cancellation of the insurance to the branch.
So went to the branch a day later armed with the application. However, they didn't accept it as the person in charge of such was “absent”.

Replied to the email that application was not accepted. Also, attached the handwritten application to the email.

Voila! After two days, the money was refunded.

Last year, in around October, SBI deducted my mother's account for PMJJBY without her explicit consent. Complained the same day on SBI's online complaint form and they refunded the deducted amount the same day.

However, this year again, they deducted ₹436 yesterday, and when I raised a complaint, they closed it asking me to go the branch to submit an application at the home branch to stop auto-renewal, but they mentioned nothing about the refund this time.

Also, their reply from the last year didn't mention that refunding the amount won't stop auto-renewal in the future.

Planning to escalate it to the Nodal Desk followed by RBI if they don't comply.
Don't know if nodal will work or not but twitter and cpgrams will definitely work .

Don't forget to drag that particular branch, use that particular branch while lodging complaint with RBI. Submit proof of previous complaint, based on which refund was issued previously but no support this time.

Also, if you have multiple branches in your reason, then it would be better to shift/change your home branch.

The same thing happened again a few days ago in my same savings account. I am planning to give the branch the RBI Bamboo.

Sure, you must. This is getting out of hand now.

By the way, I escalated it to the Regional Nodal Office yesterday. They called up today, and said that the government portal to deactivate PMJJBY policy would reopen on 15/16th June, and before that, they can neither issue the refund nor cancel future deductions.

However, nonetheless, they asked me to submit an application for refund and cancellation of the PMJJBY policy at the home branch now, and to remind them around 15th June to process it.

On 15.05.2025, I noticed in the transactions section of the SBI Yono app that a PMJJBY debit entry of ₹436.00 was present dated 10.05.2025. The description showed the Renewal of PMJJBY. Therefore, I filed a complaint with the SBI Contact Centre through email and attached all the previous communications from last year. (see attachment).

Check it out. I have filed a complaint.

On 16.05.2025, I received a useless reply from SBI Contact Centre stating the details of the PMJJBY Scheme and advising me to visit the branch to sort it out. I visited the branch the same day and asked the front desk woman to provide me with the complaint register. She directed me to the manager's office, where the complaint register was to be present.

Upon asking for the complaint register, the manager's clerk provided me with a blank sheet of paper to write my grievances, which I refused to accept. I insisted on being provided with the complaint register, which led to an argument. The manager interrupted the clerk and said to him, "Why are you quarrelling? Give the register to the customer. Not every customer is good, while not everyone is bad".

I wrote down my complaint and gave it to the manager. He provided me with a photocopy of that page stamped with the bank's seal. He then said, "What if I show you that you yourself have applied for the PMJJBY insurance?".

To which I firmly replied, "I have never applied for such insurance here. I can also show you the relevant documents that the insurance was activated in an unauthorised manner last year. Why don't you take the appropriate action on the filed complaint?"

Then he said, "I will see what I can do."

I left the branch with the acknowledged copy of the complaint.

Congratulations on being another victim of SBI. Instead of emailing them, raise the complaint in their CMS, for a slightly better experience. Their email team consists of a bunch of idiots who have the comprehension skills of a bunch of monkeys.

Update 2 (16/05/2025)
Congrats!!

I generally keep a balance of ₹1, so they haven't been able to activate it in my account ever 😀

Rs.20 was deducted from my account for PMSBY and SMS came. Within minutes shot email to SBI. Next day refunded. I am already subscribed for both schemes in PNB.

Most PSU banks except PNB have done these auto-subscription of PMSBY or PMJJBY schemes only to fulfill their targets. These schemes are in violation of rules but most banks don't cares.

But in one case this auto-subscription helped my known last year where Rs.20 was getting auto-debit and unfortunately the account holder died in accident. I was checking their passbook before closing the account and tfr of money to the son when I saw this debit entry and they let them know about it and they filed the claim and got Rs.2 Lakh within 15 days after formalities completed. The holder never subscribed for it yet it benefitted the family after his death. It was first claim at that SBI branch. Papers work was little bit hectic like death certificates, FIR copies, viscera report etc.
