It is well known that banks can automatically deduct credit card overdues from a bank account. But is it possible for a bank to deduct from a credit card to recover a negative balance in a current account
It’s common for banks to auto-debit credit card dues from savings/current accounts (auto-pay mandate or NACH). But the opposite, deducting funds from a credit card to settle a negative current account balance is not standard banking practice in India.
Becoz Credit cards are lending products, not deposit accounts. Banks cannot typically use your credit card’s available credit to top up an overdrawn (negative balance) current account automatically.
Exception If you linked Overdraft or Sweep-in Arrangements, but not against your credit card credit limit.
You can manually withdraw cash using your credit card (“cash advance”) and deposit it into your overdrawn current account, but this incurs high interest and fees. This is not automatic recovery.
Banks can’t auto-debit your credit card to recover an overdrawn current account.
Only standard account auto-debits (from deposit accounts for paying credit card bills) are allowed.
If your current account goes negative, the bank will typically ask you to fund it directly from another deposit account, transfer funds in, or manually use a cash advance never by automated credit card deduction.
