The Reserve Bank of India recently released credit card data for April 2023. According to the data, the total number of active credit cards in India increased from 85,303,238 at the end of March 2023 to 86,512,698 in April 2023.
Here is a graphic showing the market share of credit cards:

This indicates that 1,209,460 new credit cards were issued by Indian banks during that month. However, we should also consider attrition. If the attrition rate is 1% (which is the industry average), then approximately 850,000 more credit cards have been issued. Therefore, approximately 21 lakhs credit cards have been issued in April 2023.

In terms of spending, the total credit card expenditure in April 2023 amounted to Rs. 1,327,682,568,000. Here, I have included a graphic highlighting the top 10 banks based on credit card spending.

The credit card market in India is experiencing significant growth and is considered to be advanced in terms of rewarding credit cards. However, there is a need for greater focus on business and corporate credit cards by Indian banks. Currently, this segment is largely overlooked by most banks in the country.

Expanding the range of business and corporate credit card offerings can benefit both banks and businesses.
By catering to the business and corporate segments, banks can tap into a lucrative market and provide valuable financial solutions to businesses of all sizes. This would not only drive growth in the credit card market but also foster stronger relationships with corporate clients.

It is essential for banks to recognize the untapped potential in the business and corporate credit card segment and allocate resources to develop innovative products and services specifically designed for these customers. This would contribute to the overall growth and diversification of the credit card market in India.

I think average credit card users don't care about cash back but more about instant discounts, this is where ICICI truly shines. You can see icici offering instant discounts on ecom sites and extra discounts on some newly launched smartphones more often.

Interesting to see Axis cards have more offline spends than online spends even with such huge spending where as no other biggies has that.

@TechnoFino ..Great report, Thanks.

On lighter note, I wish data on number of cards category wise or name wise can also be made available. Would be very interesting to know the total no of Infinia Card holders overall or Axis Reserve or Amex Plat Charge...

Are you saying this on the basis of their products or customer care experience because in my opinion both don't even deserve the last position when it comes to experience 🤣
For me, the experience for both products and Customer Care has been quite good so far. It might be because I am holding a Burgundy account. I understand experience might be different for others.

How come HDFC always comes on top as they refuse to give card if anyone don't have current address proof or home address and office address difference is more than 100km? No other bank like icici, sbi, axis has such rule.

Axis is getting a move on. They have the best credit card products in the country at the moment, considering they have good offerings across segments. Is it their customer support or their Tech Development team that's so 20th century that is the worst in the world is debatable! If they can improve on that , HDFC will find that the game is really on. Think ICICI has better overall systems in place and has a great coverage besides regular discount offers that they are still among the toppers. And that AmazonPay card has done wonders for them.
As an aside, I was talking to the Federal Bank branch manager the other day, he was saying they are hoping to emerge as a major player in the segment in the next 3-5 years...

Federal has a long way to go - currently they take 2 weeks to just reply to a mail. Maybe it's just my case, but Federal to emerge as a major player- it has to certainly offer much better service and good products

I am an account holder with the bank and hasn't had too much difficulties with them.
As for the credit card products, they surely need to improve. They are aggressive with their offers and the LTF card offer has surely given a lot of new customers. But they need a better reward system, and probably more diversity in cards. But what he indicated was that they are serious about the sector...
