Did you change the default payment app to gpay? That should do it

Enable GPay through NFC by Default:

Turn on NFC

Settings > Google > Settings for Google Apps > GPay > Accept the pop up.

You don't even have to open GPay for payments. Your phone should be unlocked while tapping that's it.

Wow, thanks for letting me know. Being a samsung pay user, I didn't use GPay for tap and pay earlier. Shall try again.

Yes. The payment should be done using Google Pay's Tap & Pay.
