1% Cashback returns on HDFC Platinum Debit Card

This is my first time receiving this message today:

"SmartPay Limit Exceeded: SBIC00000NATDN Bill 4431 for Rs. 59,377.60 exceeds your set limit. Pay manually via HDFC Bank Net/Mobile Banking > BillPay."

I'm confused do I need to pay the full bill amount? I don't understand what's going on.

You need to pay. The auto-pay failed.

Hey Ramesh babu & JigmeKesar ,

Just wanted to clarify something I’ve set a low auto-pay limit of ₹25,000 on my card because I don’t want the full bill to be paid automatically every month. I do this on purpose so the autopay doesn’t end up deducting more than I plan.
Now, today I got a message saying the payment failed because the bill amount (around ₹59k) exceeded my set limit.

My question is—if I’ve specifically chosen to auto-pay only ₹25,000, do I still have to pay the full bill every time?
I split my credit card payment into 3 parts—₹25,000 each across 3 different cards—so the transaction goes through smoothly without needing additional authentication.

I'm new to this, so I'm a bit confused. Can you please help me understand how it works? I don’t want to make any mistakes with my payments or limits. Just trying to figure out the best way to manage my credit card payment without any issues.

Autopay works only on the full amount due. In case amount due is more than the maximum amount limit set, autopay wont schedule and you need to pay manually full amount

I have never used a partial payment option but still got a failure message even with card transaction limit set higher than the bill amount and the balance more than sufficient.

Apparently it works as you inform that the payments are going through 3 cards. Now, if your other 2 payments have not failed, just make a partial payment for covering the failed transaction.

I have had 2-3 instances of such failures from HDFC Bank in the past quarter.

After using HDFC SmartPay/Autopay for a few months, here are my notes on it. In short, it is too annoying

1) First we have to set it up with OTP and it says payment will occur 4 days before due date. We get several SMS including one that smartpay biller added.
2) Then it gets scheduled and we get another SMS that it's set to execute. Then we can login and we get to actually see on which date a scheduled payment will be executed. But the date is sometimes scheduled even 5 days earlier, it varies by card/biller so if due date of a card is 4th, and we have planned to do smartpay in a new month, it can unexpectedly schedule it on 31st/30th of the previous month
3) Then we have to cancel/stop the scheduled autopay with another OTP and again disable the SmartPay entirely with yet another OTP
4) For the ones successfully scheduled, we get a manual verification call from the bank about whether we have actually set up autopay. Someone from HDFC bank calls
5) On the day of the actual payments, we get IVR call at 6 AM to confirm the payment, and we have to TALK to the IVR, can't even press 1, so our sleep breaks on some days
6) If the amount is large, there is another confirmation about SmartPay limit exceeded so another consent is required otherwise it fails. Some people never get this SMS and it directly fails for them. But I get such an SMS "Consent required. Bill XXX for ₹ XXX exceeds RBI limit. Authorize AutoPay via HDFC Bank SmartPay: <LINK>"
7) Sometimes instead of 6 AM, the smartpay occurs at 6 PM 🤪
8) Despite all this, sometimes smartpay fails to credit the amount

There is much scope for improvement in this crude autopay smart system. One single OTP should be enough to automate everything and stop hassling the user but it doesn't work that way

and still we are doing all this for that magical number 750

Bill is due on 3rd Sept

I am getting an option to set this date so if I set it for tomorrow I will get the points?

Or I should not set any date

It clearly says let the system do auto-payment to earn cashback.
"Let the payment happen on auto mode. (Another sms would come 2-3 days before auto payment, it would also have word 'SmartPay')."

It would be auto payment only just on a different date, let's day 7 days before due date against the default 3-4 days.
The post asks to not make the payment manually ( same day) there is no discussion about setting the auto payment date.

It might be a new option altogether

Try and tell us 🙂
I have set all my billers like six months back. Don't know now if any new option is coming while registering biller.
