Amex Plat Travel - No Retention Benefits Offered - July 2025

My Platnium Travel card has come up for renewal and accordingly Amex has charged the annual fee in tbr latest statement.

For the longest time I've seen people talk about the different kinds of offers they received when they called up Amex and ask for waiver.

So I called them up today and asked if they could give me an offer too. Do note I have Platinum and Gold charge cards besides the Travel card.

They flatly, although politely, refused to give me any offer. They say that such an offer is not available for my profile. I really do not want to pay the full fee, even though it's a very beneficial card, having just doled out almost 78k a few months ago for the charge card.

Has anybody else faced this? Were you able to talk with them and get them change their decision and give you an offer?

Would appreciate any inputs.

You can try in some time. Ask them if you could speak to somebody else who can perhaps give it another consideration, etc. (I should have done that too)

Called them for cancellation of this card a few minutes ago.... they took the request and said the card will be cancelled in 3 working days after the reversal of annual fee that was already charged..
the whole call lasted about 3 minutes...
case closed...


Now I have Plat Travel + MRCC ( @1,500 annual fee)

I didn't ask for any retention offer... and also she didn't mention about any such offer also.. she said I had an excellent profile .. still she didn't initiate any such conversation

or 50% fee waiver.

I called back and asked for a better deal and they offered 2 more options
1. Pay annual fees and get 10000 points or
2. Pay 20000 reward points for annual fee waiver.

I went for 50% fee waiver.

people looking to cancel any amex card, just initiate a chat in the app and tell them i'm not looking for renewal / retention offers, please cancel cancel cancel, they will cancel it in a min or so. your app will show card cancel after 5 or so minutes. i did it for 2 of my AMEX cards

I initiated a call yesterday. The fees has already been charged.

Amex has stopped giving fee waiver options from effective July 2025. Customer support has confirmed the same.

News was already out in groups, and few knew the upcoming changes.

For greater goods! In the last two years, many people applied for an Amex just for MRs and vouchers, and didn't even use the card. I hope whoever stays with Amex will benefit after these people cancel their cards.

But if we takeaway the incremental, milestone-based MRs I do not see any value to any of the Amex cards except perhaps the Platinum Charge which gives certain statuses. (I have used and benefited from both the Marriott and Hilton statuses). Even the base reward rate is really poor, including the Plat charge.

Or am I missing something?

On the contrary, platinum charge provides least value on renewals. You can't value statues at 78k per year.

Best option for Plat Travel is to pay the fees and get 10K MR in return via retention as of now, unless they agree to reduce the fees by 50%

I agree. Platinum Charge is a 1 year card for almost everyone. The fee on the card is not justified at all. It doesn't make sense even for frequent travellers because the statuses might make little sense to them since they might already be having such statuses organically.

I have a renewal coming up on my amex plat travel card on july 11 2025. I checked with a customer executive for any renewal offers and they replied like "
I understand your concern regarding the renewal offer. I would like to share that the benefits that this card carry certainly outweigh the fee. To give you the unique card benefits, offers and promotions, American Express charge a nominal membership fee. I am afraid as there are no such offers running". What should I do?
