Bank of Baroda Super Savings Account – Unauthorised Auto Sweep, Unclear Policies & No Accountability

In March this year, I opened a Super Savings Account with Bank of Baroda, mainly because they were offering a First Year Free Rupay Select Debit Card — a decent benefit that seemed to make sense.

The account came with a Minimum Average Balance (MAB) requirement of ₹20,000, which I’ve been maintaining — in fact, I’ve usually kept around ₹25,000 in the account.

But recently, something completely unexpected and unfair happened.

💸 Silent Auto Sweep & Unjust Charges

One day, without any prior consent, notification, or opt-in, the bank swept ₹15,000 out of my account under their so-called Auto Sweep facility.

What’s absurd?
  • As per BoB’s own website, Auto Sweep is supposed to trigger only when balance exceeds ₹50,000. Mine never crossed ₹25,000.
  • The bank’s mobile app kept showing my full balance (₹25,000) — making me believe that I was maintaining the required MAB.
  • I only discovered the issue after charges were deducted, apparently because the MAB had "fallen below the limit" post-sweep — even though I never authorized such a feature.
  • When I raised a complaint, it was closed not once, but twice, citing “charges are as per bank policy.” But how is a sweep below ₹50K even allowed as per that same policy?

🤔 Rethinking This Account Variant

Now I’m wondering:
  • What exactly are the additional benefits of this Super Savings variant beyond the first-year Rupay Select offer?
  • Is it really worth the hassle of maintaining a strict MAB, only to later be penalised because of a background feature I never opted into?
  • I'm okay with keeping ₹25K in the account, but not if surprise charges keep popping up.
  • What happens to the Rupay Select Debit card if account is downgraded?

🚫 Auto Sweep Deactivation – Who’s Responsible?

I’ve asked for two things:
  1. Reversal of the unfair charges
  2. Disabling of the Auto Sweep facility
But even here, the response loop is frustrating:
  • Branch employees say they can’t disable Auto Sweep and ask me to contact customer care.
  • Customer care says it can be disabled, but the branch has to do it.
So I’m caught in a classic blame-ping-pong — with no one taking ownership.

📢 Calling Out to Others: Have You Faced This?

  • Were you enrolled into Auto Sweep without your knowledge?
  • Did your balance drop below MAB because of the sweep — and were you penalized for it?
  • Did the bank app give you misleading balance info?
  • Have you tried disabling Auto Sweep and faced similar confusion?

I’d really appreciate if others can share their experiences in the comments — or let me know if you’ve found a way to permanently stop Auto Sweep.

If this continues unresolved, I’ll be forced to take it up with the RBI Banking Ombudsman.

I had the similar issue; instead of 50K, auto sweep keeps triggering at 10K. Because of this, they deduced the MAB charges.

Solution - I lodged a complaint on the BOB website, got a call from the bank senior manager; she was a really nice person. She told me that when an account is opened online, these problems happen. There are some settings which need to be corrected from the branch end, but because of some technical reason, that did happen. Anyway, she fixed the issue and reversed the charges. All of this happened on the phone.

So lodge the complaint. Don’t bother to call customer care; they are useless.

damn ! mine too 10k has been transferred to fd. I am maintaining 11k currently, thinking there will be no penalty as overall balance is 20+ plus . This is a serious issue, You should complain in Rbi Ombudsman

Auto sweep accounts always have the headache mine years back with IndusInd max privilege account
Finally I closed it lol
Bank do good for us by giving fd interest instead of savings account but sometimes it’s a pain for us to handle finances
I'm okay with auto sweep as long as they acknowledge the threshold and make sure the threshold is above the required MAB.
