PMJJBY unauthorised activation & cancellation - SBI Savings A/C

PMJJBY New

I have an SBI savings account. They (probably branch employees) activated PMJJBY without my consent. It resulted in a debit of ₹436.00.

Complained to the SBI customer care (screenshot attached), but they said to contact the branch.

Visited the branch the next day. They tried to convince me not to cancel the insurance that it's only a small amount deducted every year. On insisting on cancellation, I was told to submit an application for cancellation of the insurance to the branch.
So went to the branch a day later armed with the application. However, they didn't accept it as the person in charge of such was “absent”.

Replied to the email that application was not accepted. Also, attached the handwritten application to the email.

Voila! After two days, the money was refunded.

Ahh there's too many victims.
Well same happened with my mother acc recieved message 6-7 days ago maintain balance of 436 etc.
Then i checked last years statement they started deducting from 2022.
Will visit branch today to update pan/email and escalate this till rbi if they dont refund all amount.

The fight isn't over yet. My time was wasted by the bank due to multiple branch visits for these two years consecutively regarding this.
I'll update here soon.
Good for you that you received the refund. In my multiple complaints—from raising a complaint on their CCRF (CMS) portal to emailing their Local Head Office (AGM, Customer Care)—I got the same reply: to wait until 15th June, as the portal is currently down, which is really weird as you've got the refund already despite being from the same city as I am.

From what I understood recently by raising a complaint to RBI Ombudsman against SBI recently and by emailing to their Nodal and Zonal desks is that the Branch Manager is the *only* person responsible to take action against your complaints, and his reply is considered final, and that they have no proper grievance redressal mechanism whatsoever.

I would rather wait until 20th June, and raise a complaint on the RBI Ombudsman CMS portal against them. As proof, I have a copy of my application for refund and cancellation submitted at the branch a few days ago with their stamp and signature of the BM.

Update 4 New
On 20.05.2025, the matter was escalated to the Local Head Office (LHO), Kolkata. I requested them to provide me with a written assurance that no such unauthorised activation of any insurance and unauthorised debit of insurance premium shall take place in the future without the explicit consent of the account holder.

Update:
My mother received a refund of ₹436 from SBI on 28-May-2025, way ahead of 15th June, as they had originally asked to wait. So, I didn't have to bother writing to RBI Ombudsman this time.

However, despite sending the Branch Manager email two times, he hasn't confirmed whether the PMJJBY policy has been successfully cancelled or not. I also sent an email to the Nodal-cum-Local Head Office (Assistant General Manager, Customer Care) about that. Instead of replying whether it has been cancelled or not, those idiots forwarded the email to the branch and asked her to communicate with them going forward.

Seriously, hats off to SBI! No words! 👏👏👏

For me just a message to normal customer care was enough and very next day sbi returned money to account.

Policy won't be cancelled but yes no claims can be made either against this policy as banks can contend customer was reversed so no liability on them.

By "Policy cancellation," I was referring to the permanent cancellation of all the future deductions against the PMJJBY policy. I had already submitted a single application at the branch for both refund as well as cancellation on 13th May. While refund can be processed even if you complain online, but the permanent cancellation of the policy cannot be done without going to the branch. And even if they cancel it, I need a written confirmation from them for future references.

I got the written confirmation about no future deductions in email itself. I work with deeper thoughts as we all know what banks are capable of and what is their level of working around. 🙂
