Misleading LTF Offer and an Unprofessional Sales Pitch from HDFC

In Brief:
I received an email from HDFC offering a lifetime free credit card, but during the application, only paid cards were shown, so I didn’t proceed. Later, a rep called and tried to convince me that the paid card would become LTF after a year, which I knew wasn’t true. He vaguely mentioned a first-year-free offer, but I insisted I’d only go for an LTF card. His tone turned slightly condescending as he claimed HDFC had stopped offering LTF cards this year. When I mentioned I already have 12–13 cards with a ₹10–11 lakh limit, his tone changed to respectful. Oddly, he then offered an HSBC LTF card and asked for income documents, which felt unprofessional, so I ended the call.

Long Post

I recently received an email from HDFC offering me a lifetime free (LTF) credit card. I applied, but during the application process, I was only shown paid cards. Since the LTF option wasn’t available as promised, I didn’t complete the application.

Today, I got a call from an HDFC representative asking why I didn’t proceed. I explained that I was only interested in an LTF card, and since that wasn’t offered, I chose not to continue.

He then tried to convince me by saying that, due to my good relationship with HDFC, the paid card would become LTF after one year. I knew that wasn’t true, but I didn’t argue. I simply repeated that I would only take a card if it’s LTF.

Next, he mentioned that the card fees are charged only after the first year, implying some sort of FYF (First Year Free) benefit, but still didn’t clearly mention any such offer. Again, I clearly said I’m not interested unless the card is LTF.

At that point, his tone changed a bit—almost condescending—as he told me that HDFC had stopped offering LTF cards this session and won’t have any until next year.

He then asked if I had any other credit cards. I told him I currently have 12–13 cards with a combined limit of ₹10–11 lakhs. After hearing that, his tone suddenly became more respectful.

Then, oddly enough, he said he could offer me an HSBC credit card as LTF if I provided my salary slip and last 3 months' bank statement. That felt very unprofessional and confusing to me—how did the conversation shift from HDFC to HSBC?

I told him I’m only comfortable sharing my existing credit card statements, not income documents. He paused for a moment, seemingly unsure of what to say, and then started doing something on his end. At that point, I had lost all confidence in the conversation and decided to hang up.
