TF Select
What is the best way to get Yen?
  1. convert INR to Dollar/Euro in India and then use that to convert to Yen at the Tokyo Airport
  2. convert INR to Yen in India
  3. convert INR to Yen in Tokyo Airport

which forex card would be best for cash withdrawal?
Open Indusind exclusive account and ask for the Visa/Mastercard Signature Exclusive DC. Best option currently.

But on watching the state of indusind right now, silent Devaluation can happen any time.

Open Fi Money account (free) and get their zero forex debit card. It has zero forex on international online and POS transactions and a flat 100rs fees for ATM withdrawal, this is best in India.

Note: you need to maintain 50k monthly to have zero forex benefit.

Japanese Yen New
This is for people in the future, japanese banks charge less conversion charges. I have on multiple occasions found it better to just use my debit card and at the Japanese ATM, do currency conversion (that is, ask the ATM to charge my account in ₹). Big banks like MUFG, Mizuho, it's cheaper than using my Forex (tried with ICICI and HDFC).

I recently visited Japan and took two cards with me: an SBI JCB debit card and a Wise card (note: residents of India currently can't get a Wise card). Interestingly, while the SBI JCB debit card didn’t work for purchases at Japanese shops by tap, swipe, or online it worked flawlessly for ATM withdrawals.

The best part? There were zero foreign exchange charges when withdrawing yen from ATMs at Japanese banks, and the exchange rate was even better than Google’s rate.

So, if you can get your hands on a JCB debit card, you essentially have unlimited access to cash in Japan at a great rate.

Just a heads-up: Cash is still king in Japan. Many shops do not accept Visa or Mastercard issued by foreign banks, so be prepared and carry enough cash when you're out.

Ohh yes, Wise is the best, after I got wise, I just use it for all my forex transactions. Which country are you a resident of by the way?

I am a resident of india but got wise card in 2020 in Germany. I have been in Canada, Uk after that and wise provides multiple bank accounts on single ID plus interest on all accounts. It's a pity wise account can't be applied in india.

Nicee. Yeah, Wise Card isn't there in India, that's a shame. Still it's better than traditional banks. I use wise for inward remittance of my business in India.
