American Express MRCC Card Benefits and Optimal Usage

You're wondering if an Amex card is even worth it?

Or thinking of getting a new credit card that offers you free hotel stays?

Amex is often disregarded as the luxury card or one with the expensive yearly fees but your opinions are about to change.

Everyone's dream card is the Black Card, also known as the Centurion card.
It comes with a whooping ₹11,00,000 joining fees(yes, you read that right! 11L is the joining fees and 3L annual fees)

But we're not going to discuss that today, we're normal people so let's discuss a card for normal people.
That's where the American Express Membership Rewards Credit Card comes in.

Why should you get MRCC?

1. INTERNATIONAL TRANSACTIONS

Want to buy that item in the Black Friday sale? Amex works.
Want to buy something exclusive from Amazon.com? Amex works.
Want to buy that VPN to watch the Korean/French series on Netflix? Amex works.

Where nothing works, Amex has stayed with me and surprisingly worked smoothly.
Read this post, I blindly suggested Amex and it didn't let me down.

2. DISPUTE RESOLUTIONS

Did you buy something and feel the seller scammed you?
You have two options, run to the bank, complain about how UPI is bad and the reversal methods are crap!
Or swipe your Amex and remain stress-free always. Call the support, share your reason and the money is back in your account.

I have tried this on different merchants, swiped at shady places and entered on websites I shouldn't have.
The customer care always had my back and prevented me from embarrassing stories!

3. REWARDS

How can we forget the most important point? If it's not rewarding, it's not worth it.
With MRCC, you just need to spend ₹6000 to get 1000 MR points which offers an insane 16.67% returns*.
Spend more and hit ₹20,000 and get 2000 bonus MR points(10% returns*)

Not to forget these are just bonus points, you get an additional points for 1 MR point for every ₹50 that you spend on the card.
If you spend smartly and get vouchers, you can even get 2 MR points for every ₹50!
(Use the Amex Gyftr multiplier page to buy vouchers with multiplier rewards)

That's 1240 points for every ₹6,000 spent which is 20.66% returns, one of the highest in the credit cards industry.

OR 2800 points for every ₹20,000 spent which is 14% returns, still pretty amazing.

And how much does it cost?

FREE for the first year!
₹1500 for the second year(can be negotiated with CC based on your spends)

Optimal Usage Guide for Amex MRCC:

To get the most points, you need to hit a minimum of ₹6,000 per month.
You can do that by buying 1500 x 4 Amazon vouchers, this balance can be used to pay your bills, recharges and shopping.

There are 30+ brand vouchers that you can buy from! You don't need to buy them in advance.
Let's say if you're shopping at Reliance Trends, instead of paying with your card there, just buy the voucher online instantly and pay with those instead.

This will get you 2x rewards instead of the usual swiping benefits.

Or just swipe them anywhere to hit the 20k milestone, any and all transactions are counted towards this.

These rewards sound great, but where do I redeem them?

I'm glad you asked!

The percentages* that I have mentioned above are considering you love to travel and wander the country in your free time!
You can claim 1 MR point = 1 Marriott Bonvoy point which can be redeemed at ₹1 at several of their properties.
(Even at ₹2 or more if you travel internationally and spot the right deal)

To sweeten it further, Amex runs a yearly offer(valid right now) where you get a 30% bonus on redeeming it for MB points.
If you make a booking in Maldives Marriott right now, the room costs ₹1,81,000 or 100K points to book for a night.

With the current Amex offer, you need 80k MR points to redeem that night!
That's ₹2.26 in value for every point!
But honestly, how many of us will travel to Maldives and stay in that luxury resort?
Let's just say even if you redeem them in India for 10k-15k properties, you should still get ₹1 value per point.

Don't like Marriott? You can redeem them for Taj vouchers at ₹0.5 per point.
Don't like Taj? You can redeem them for slightly lower at Shoppers Stop, Tanishq or even Amazon/Flipkart.

But I see a lot of people complaining - Amex is for the rich, no rewards, why so?
A lot of people say Tesla is bad, they probably haven't even seen one.
A lot of people say SRK is bad, they probably haven't met him.
A lot of people say a lot of things, you decide for yourself.

Apply for Amex MRCC Card for free using the link in my signature!
DM me if you have any questions.

If you can spend 4L a year, you can get the Platinum Travel variant!
(Offers you even higher rewards - 40K points + Taj voucher on 4L annual purchases)

for 6k spends per month-1240MR points
for 72k spends per year -14880 MR points
Gold collection is devalued by 1k
18k points = 6000 amazon pay
14880 points = 4960 amazon pay
subtract 1800annual fee (=3160)
So for 72k spends= 3160 amazon pay
4.39% returns

if we cross 20k twice a year and claim half annual fee, reward rate is 5.1%

i have a ltf DCB which gives around 8-9% returns in amazon pay
How come DCB gives 8-9% on apay. As they charge a fees of 2.35% on apay voucher.

My mistake..
for 10k we get 990 points
so subtract 235 (extra charges)
so for 10k---755rewards = 7.55%

but as are bound to book flights via hdfc portal we will lose some 1% more
so DCB reward rate is 6.5%
just a moderate increase over MRCC
Also, note you added MRCC yearly fees but not DCB yearly fees.

You might have gotten DCB LTF but normally, the fee is 10,000+taxes per year.

To keep the comparison fair, add that and then we have the real numbers! :)

Is anyone facing problems, today, using Reward Multiplier and MRCC?
When I enter the MRCC card number the "Proceed to pay" button stays grayed out. I can get the button enabled by entering a 16 digit APay card number and then replacing it with the 15 digit Amex. However, the transaction doesn't go through, it just returns to the voucher selection page
(Note: First time I'm using Amex. I already enabled domestic online transactions and set a limit)

EDIT: I am probably the credit card world's biggest idiot. Leaving this comment so other people new to Amex might benefit. The reason it wasn't working is because the CVV in Amex is the 4 digit number on the front of the card not the 3 digit number at the back of card. Thanks go out to Amazon for pointing out my mistake.

A couple more questions
1) I see posts on the forum saying a maximum of 25K APay vouchers a month. But Gyftr says 10K. Is 10K the new limit?
2) Will Gyftr/Amex block the card if I use it again with a different phone number to buy more APay vouchers? I guess "yes"

Thanks for replying

Happens to all of us, it's completely fine! :)

If you add a voucher and then don't buy it and close the session, often it adds up that as purchase as well.
The best way is to buy in the same session and don't just add vouchers to cart and leave them.
(It's a website bug, not the new limit)

2) Will Gyftr/Amex block the card if I use it again with a different phone number to buy more APay vouchers? I guess "yes"

I've never heard of such a scenario but I would suggest staying under the radar and not over doing this too much to prevent any such action.

Hi, I'm looking to get MRCC card and I need referral can someone pls help and also explain the procedure to get successfully processed as I've seen few whose applications got declined.

My CIBIL is 780 but I have recently applied for some 8-9 cards so I have that much entry in my cibil so should I apply now or wait for more time? 🤔

Pls guide!!
Your cibil is good so it should be fine. Do you have any missed payment then it could be a problem with amex else you can use my referral and get mrcc first year free.
When I applied for MRCC last year I also had bunch of queries because of icici au rbl banks but still got card.

Also with referral you get first year free and only 1500 fees from second year which can be waived on 1.5L spends

Hi

This is my first post on this forum. I have an MRCC card since 2018 and have been using it to buy Amazon gift vouchers (1500*4) from Amazon itself.

Going through the forum I found out that I can buy the same from rewards multiplier and earn 2x points for the same.

I would like to know that is there a limit on amount of vouchers that I can buy in a month?

I have insurance premium of around 50k coming up next month.

Also is it suggested that get gold charge as well? Or take gold charge card and cancel mrcc.

My spending are around 3.5 lakhs a year however I am unable to do 20k per month regularly as many of my spends are bunched togather.

Not sure about amazon limit.
But gold charge will give 5x returns compared to mrcc 2x on rewards multiplier.

Also platinum travel is good if you can spend total of 4L in year because of its yearly milestone -15k points on 1.9L and more 25k points on 4L spends. Also it gives 3x points on rewards multiplier.

But take into account fees as well as both gold charge and plat travel has very high fees (~5k) compared to mrcc (1.5k)

Absolutely, DM me if you have any other questions!
Depending on your spends, MRCC can offer you way better rewards than both of those cards.

Amex MR points can be used to book flights directly using the Amex Travel portal where some flight rates can be cheaper than all other portals.
Some others could be more expensive as well so you can compare before utilizing your points.

Another way is as Mahesh mentioned above to convert and redeem them for Amazon Pay vouchers. The value will be somewhat lesser but opens the door to use them for tons of different things - from paying bills to shopping, everything gets covered.
I am not getting any option to book flight through points. I am getting only card option. Is there any way to activate that option?

Hi all

Went ahead and applied for the gold charge card through refferal of sousnake.

On the application it never asked me if I am currently holding to amex card or not. Only it gave a declaration whether I am holding to an amex card outside India. Hope this doesn't give them a reason for rejection.

I have reference number for the application. Hoping the same will be approved (fingers crossed).

Just received an email from amex that MITC for all cc has been changed.

Charges for Amex gold credit card 2nd year onwards is now 2000/- instead of 4500/-.

Also for MRCC it's 4500/- 2nd year onwards in case spends are not upto 1.50 lakhs.

On amex website it has been updated for MRCC but for gold charge card it is still showing 2nd year fee as 4500/-. Now I am wondering if gold card and gold credit are same or different. As MITC is showing 2nd year onwards 2000/- and website is showing 4500/-.

Actually it make sense to have lower fees for gold compared to mrcc as milestone benefits are better in mrcc.

But people who already have mrcc and took it at 1500, they should not be affected, right?

Hey folks, I’m new here, and relatively new to understanding the benefits of a credit card. I currently have 3 CC’s , Citi Indian oil card (specifically requested this over my old card for Indian oil pumps) , Amazon pay icici and hdfc regalia . Total limit is approx 15L. I just got off the call with Citibank to close my Citi card (and bank account) because of their shift to axis, and I’ve been on the lookout for a card that can do it all, from utility bills to shopping to fuel etc. I hardly ever use these cards but I want to start switching all my spending to a CC . My normal spend a month is approximately 75k to 1.2L. I saw the opening post here about the MRCC card and how it can be used for everything , does this still stand ? Is this currently the best option I can take ?
Thanks in advance and apologies if I made a mistake on forum etiquette.

The easiest way to use mrcc is to complete it's monthly milestone
1. Do 4 transaction of 1500 - 1k bonus points
2. Do total spends of 20k in a month and get another 1k points.
Things like nps and fuel are also counted in milestone.
