In the land of valiant kings and resplendent palaces, Udaipur stands out like a gleaming gem, its shimmering lakes reflecting the stories of its bygone royal era. This year, to mark my wife’s birthday, I decided to ensconce ourselves in the lap of luxury, choosing the illustrious Raffles Udaipur, where we stayed in the prestigious Presidential Suite, a realm of opulence and splendour.
This city, the ‘Venice of the East', with its ethereal charm, mirrored our mood of celebration and love, turning ordinary moments into memories of a lifetime. The palatial Raffles, with its elegant décor and impeccable service, became our sanctuary, echoing the rich traditions and royal heritage of Udaipur.
Our journey was not merely a voyage through the illustrious lanes of the city but a sensory experience, a dance of colours, flavours, and textures, unfolding the soul of Udaipur to us. With every step, we discovered a new facet of this enchanting land, from its magnificent architecture to its vibrant bazaars and the culinary magic of Rajasthan.
In this travelogue, walk with us through the royal corridors of Udaipur and the luxurious aisles of Raffles, as we celebrate love, life, and a birthday amidst the timeless elegance of this magical city.
Embarking on our odyssey to the royal city of Udaipur, we chose to envelop ourselves in the unmatched luxury and premium service of Vistara Business Class. Our journey kicked off from the city of joy Kolkata, whisking us to the dynamic capital city of Delhi, from where we were to make our way to the jewel of Rajasthan, Udaipur.
We had our hopes pinned on boarding the advanced A321neo, but Vistara had a more enchanting surprise in store for us. We were welcomed aboard the iconic Vistara Retrojet, a unique aircraft adorned with retro livery, commemorating the 150-year illustrious journey of the TATA Group.
The gastronomical journey on board was equally remarkable, with exquisite meals that were a treat to our palates. The cabin crew went above and beyond to ensure our journey was comfortable and pleasurable, serving us with unparalleled hospitality across both sectors. Their dedication enhanced our in-flight experience, making every moment memorable.
This journey was more than just a transition between cities; it was a seamless blend of elegance, luxury, and exemplary service, setting the perfect prelude to our exploration of the city of lakes and palaces, and promising an adventure steeped in royalty, romance, and historical grandeur.
Embarking on our journey to Raffles, a prearranged airport transfer promptly ushered us to the Raffles Boat Jetty, a brief 20-minute sojourn from the airport. Here, we were accommodated in a serene waiting room, offering panoramic views of the tranquil Udai Sagar Lake, as our luggage was meticulously placed on a splendid boat. The ensuing ride to the island, a short but enchanting 12 minutes, unveiled the property's majestic beauty.
Our guide from Raffles, during this aquatic journey, became our storyteller, weaving tales about the mystical Udai Sagar Lake and the ancient Aravalis, enriching our minds with the lore of the land. He meticulously introduced us to the myriad activities the hotel had to offer and painted a vivid picture of the magnificent property we were about to explore, where every corner whispered tales of elegance and every view was a masterpiece painted with nature’s finest palette.
Upon landing on the jetty of the enchanting island, we were greeted warmly by the cordial staff of Raffles Udaipur. They welcomed us with a melodious Rajasthani song, enveloping us in a symphony of tradition and hospitality. We then embarked on a buggy and were conveyed to the hotel lobby, where the Head Butler, Mr. Nirmal, stood ready to greet us, extending a personal touch to our warm reception.
As we stepped in, we were bathed in a shower of rose petals, a fragrant and luxurious welcome. Mr. Nirmal subsequently escorted us to the Writers Bar. It was here that the staff had organized a heartwarming birthday celebration for my wife, marked by a beautifully presented cake. The festivities were complemented by the Udaipur Sling, a refreshing beverage inspired by the renowned Singapore Sling, serving as our welcome drink.
Following our warm reception, we were ushered to the Presidential Suite, a stunning surprise meticulously orchestrated by Mr. Gautam, the Director of Operations at Raffles Udaipur, leaving my wife completely overwhelmed and amazed. His innovative vision, brought to life with the help of the remarkable Team Butlers, created a symphony of exquisite decorations that spoke volumes of the meticulous attention to detail synonymous with the Raffles brand.
It was here that we met Ms. Nikita, our assigned butler, whose presence was like a breath of fresh air. Although it may seem too early to assert, her role was pivotal; without her, our experience at Raffles Udaipur would unquestionably have been incomplete. Her sweetness and efficiency added a whole new dimension to our stay, making every moment feel specially crafted for us. Every surprise and every gesture underlined the epitome of luxury and hospitality that Raffles Udaipur imbued, creating a cascade of cherished memories and personalized experiences, seamlessly blending tradition, elegance, and warmth.
Following our introduction, Ms. Nikita meticulously noted our plans and acquainted us with the comprehensive arrangements made for our ensuing days at Raffles Udaipur, covering our accommodation, dining, and beverage needs. With her duties momentarily fulfilled, she retreated, allowing us to revel in the splendour of the Presidential Suite.
This marks our second encounter with such luxurious lodging, but the experience this time is unparalleled. The suite, sprawling across 2800 square feet, is a sublime manifestation of European Architecture, adorned with meticulously crafted decorations. It is a haven of luxury, housing two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living space, and a dining area. Moreover, it offers state-of-the-art amenities including a sauna, a gym, and exclusive spa services.
The immense space was so vast that we couldn’t explore every nook; it was a thrilling overwhelm. For a family of four, it’s the epitome of relaxation and luxury. It boasts four balconies offering majestic views of Udai Sagar Lake and the Aravallis, presenting the most breathtaking sunset vistas over Aravali.
The living room within the suite is a testament to exquisite craftsmanship, adorned with intricate mother-of-pearl and bone-inlay furniture, reflecting meticulous attention to detail. This space intertwines seamlessly with the master bedroom, where walls serve as canvases, hand-painted with vibrant Rajasthani art, adding a touch of local charm and tradition. Every element within the space is a harmonious blend of European sophistication and Rajasthani cultural richness. It's not merely a living space; it's a curated experience, a journey through diverse cultures, manifesting in a unique aesthetic symphony of design, art, and tradition.

During our stay at Raffles Udaipur, we had the privilege of spending a day in the opulent Presidential Suite. For the following three days, we experienced luxury in one of the six Oasis Suites. Positioned as the penultimate room category, just below the Presidential Suite, the Oasis Suites offer a unique blend of luxury amenities. Nestled on the ground floor, each suite boasts its own lawn, a private plunge pool, and a cabana. From here, guests can marvel at the stunning vistas of Udai Sagar Lake and the Aravali range. However, the surrounding gardens might slightly obscure the lake view. Those who prioritize an unobstructed view over amenities like a lawn or plunge pool might prefer the Manor Suites. Located on the 2nd or 3rd floor, these suites provide a direct view of Udai Sagar Lake. Guests can choose between the sunrise or the enchanting sunset side of the property. Personally, I recommend the sunset side, which casts a magical hue across the landscape. Notably, the coveted Presidential Suite also offers this breathtaking sunset view.

Each evening during turndown service, the housekeeping team's attention to detail stood out. Their notes, though small, significantly enhanced our stay. One note would provide us with the next day's sunrise, sunset, moonrise, and weather, setting expectations for our adventures. Another note offered intriguing tales of the Royals of Rajasthan, enriching our connection to the region's heritage. These thoughtful gestures, subtle yet impactful, were undeniably memorable.
Raffles Udaipur is a beacon of culinary excellence with its eight distinct restaurants and bars, each radiating a unique charm.
The Dining Room stands out with its all-day dining experience, seamlessly combining offerings from Rasoi, Sawai Kitchen, and Raffles Patisserie. Those in search of authentic Rajputana flavours can head to Sawai Kitchen, which plates up heirloom dishes inspired by the royal kitchens of yesteryears.
For a more hands-on experience, Rasoi provides an opportunity for guests to delve deeper into the authentic essence of culinary artistry. By scheduling a bespoke masterclass with the resident chefs, guests can elevate their gastronomic knowledge. This personalized experience is facilitated by the dedicated butlers.
Harvest is where sustainability meets flavour. Serving dishes that resonate with the farm-to-table ethos, it boasts ingredients freshly harvested from the island's own organic farm. If you're seeking relaxation, the Pool Bar provides the ideal setting with its assortment of tropical cocktails, light menus, and fresh juices beside a pristine temperature-controlled pool.
For a nostalgic trip, Long Bar is reminiscent of Raffles Singapore's iconic bar, offering timeless cocktails accompanied by rhythmic tunes. Raffles Patisserie brings innovation to the table with its bistro-style offerings, while Writers Bar, surrounded by a vast collection of books, offers a serene spot, once frequented by renowned authors like J.K. Rowling.
During our stay, we had the privilege of exploring a variety of dining experiences that the hotel had to offer. Breakfast at The Dining Room was a delightful affair. Although the buffet choices were limited, the à la carte menu more than compensated for it. The flexibility to order anything off the menu, coupled with the attentive staff ready to serve any available dish, made breakfast an event to look forward to each day. Among our favourites were the rich Eggs Benedict, the spicy Peri Peri Cheese Omelette, and an authentic taste of South India. A unique treat was their Avocado toast - a rarity in most of India's top hotels due to cost constraints, but oh-so-delicious!
We couldn't resist trying The Sawai Kitchen, a haven for those with an appetite for authentic Rajasthani dishes. The portions were generous, almost dauntingly so, even for seasoned food lovers like us. The dal bati churma stood out, a rich concoction of lentils and wheat dumplings, a Rajasthani classic.
However, food was just one part of the experience. The Writers Bar, with its towering bookshelves packed with a vast array of genres, was a bookworm's dream come true. Time seemed to blur as we spent hours engrossed in various tomes, our reading sessions punctuated only by sips from our refreshing beverages.

The experience at Raffles Udaipur was accentuated by the exceptional beverages crafted by Mr. Vansh, a young mixologist with a flair that competes with seasoned professionals. We often left our drink choices in his hands, asking him to "Surprise us," and he consistently exceeded expectations. Missing out on a concoction by Vansh would be a true oversight for anyone visiting Raffles Udaipur. The stellar service wasn't confined to just him; Ms. Nikita, along with Vishnu and Abhigna, showcased exemplary hospitality. They ensured we were catered to, even when we arrived late for meals. Raffles Udaipur truly boasts a team of gems that elevate the guest experience.
On the other hand, The Long Bar, exuding a sense of old-world charm and colonial elegance, was the perfect place to unwind as the day faded. The gentle breeze in the alfresco seating area made it a tranquil retreat. Even though the bar officially closed at midnight, memories of our last evening, where we lingered until the wee hours, soaking in the serenity, will stay etched in our minds. This place wasn't just a hotel; it was an experience, and every corner told a story of luxury, taste, and timeless elegance.
At Raffles' Spa in Udaipur, we were immersed in a world of relaxation and luxury. Sonam, the Spa Manager from the scenic Bhutan, enlightened us on the spa's essence and ingredients. His uncanny ability to intuitively match oils to our mood was like witnessing magic. A delightful sugar cane beverage welcomed us, setting the tone for our experience. Raffles' standout feature lets you customize your body scrub, and they proudly incorporate ingredients from Subtle Energies, a renowned Australian wellness brand.
Opting for the Enchanting Package of couple therapy was a treat. Perfect for pairs seeking an immersive spa experience, it blends facial, scrubbing, and body massage over 150 minutes, ending with a toast of sparkling wine. Our therapists, Naomi and Soni, were exceptionally skilled, ensuring every moment was blissful. Post-treatment, we unwound further in a serene relaxation area with our sparkling wine. The experience was rounded off with a gracious escort to our room by our butler, Ms. Nikita. Raffles Udaipur's Spa is a must-visit, earning our wholehearted endorsement.
During our stay, we experienced an unforgettable gesture by our butler, Ms. Nikita. While we dined, she secretly arranged a surprise. Returning to our room, we were greeted by a dim ambience leading to an open shower door. Inside, a bathtub awaited, filled with fragrant rose petals and surrounded by glowing candles. Such unexpected and thoughtful gestures truly elevate an experience, making moments memorable. Nikita's touch added warmth to our journey, showcasing the magic of small acts of kindness.
Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Udaipur, Raffles Udaipur is a magnificent spectacle of luxury and nature seamlessly blending into one another. The sprawling 21-acre property, filled predominantly with lush greenery, is a testament to the commitment Raffles has to sustainability and maintaining the natural beauty of its surroundings.
At the heart of the property, you'll find a captivating pool area surrounded by cabanas. This is where the allure of modern design intertwines with nature's splendour. While one could argue that the pool's size isn't commensurate with the property's grandeur, there's no denying its beauty. The serene environment, complemented by the gentle rustling of leaves and the occasional chirp of a bird, is relaxation epitomized.
Speaking of which, Raffles Udaipur boasts an impressive diversity of avian life. Over 18 different bird species are regulars on the property, providing guests with a delightful natural symphony every morning. And if you're fortunate enough to visit during the migration season, you're in for a treat; the island becomes a hub for migrating birds, making it a birdwatcher's paradise.
True to the ethos of luxury, Raffles Udaipur is committed to offering its guests the freshest and finest in cuisine. It achieves this by cultivating most of its organic ingredients right on its grounds. The farm-to-table approach, a hallmark of the world's best hotels, is impeccably executed here.

One of the property's true gems, however, is its viewpoints. With three vantage points for sunrise and two for sunset, the panoramas on offer are nothing short of breathtaking. The sunset point, in particular, comes highly recommended. As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of gold and crimson, one realizes the magic of Udaipur.

For couples seeking romance, there's an unmissable spectacle at Raffles Udaipur. Beyond the captivating sunrise, an enchanting walk awaits. As twilight gives way to night, make your way through the meticulously manicured gardens, leading to the jetty. With the onset of dusk, the lights come alive, casting a magical glow on the surroundings. This ethereal ambience, painted in soft luminescence against the night's canvas, evokes an ineffable dreaminess. It's a moment of tranquillity and beauty intertwined, an experience that should be seized without compromise. An absolute must-do for those in search of memorable romantic moments.
Raffles Udaipur also pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of India. The Vaishnodevi temple, housing statues of Lord Ganesha and Garud, is a spiritual haven for guests. Open at 6 a.m. and again at 6 p.m., it offers a serene space for reflection.
Discussing our trip costs, the round trip via Vistara Flight for two of us in Business Class from Kolkata to Udaipur, with a stopover in Delhi, amounted to 1,20,000 CV points. Our accommodation at Accor was settled using 1,89,000 ALL Points, with a conversion of 20 EUR for every 1,000 ALL points. It's worth noting that this didn't include the tariff for the Presidential Suite. The seamless confluence of points made our experience cost-effective, while still luxuriating in opulence. It's insightful to consider how loyalty points can truly optimize such indulgent experiences.
Before we departed from the enchanting environs of Raffles Udaipur, a personal touch awaited us. Ms. Nikita, who had been instrumental in crafting our exceptional stay, graced our room with her presence. She generously presented us with lovely mementoes, capturing the essence of our time there. It's rare to form such connections during trips, but Nikita left an indelible mark on our hearts. Her warmth and dedication epitomized the unparalleled hospitality we encountered.
Raffles Udaipur wasn't just a hotel stay; it was a narrative, unfolding each day, with each staff member playing their part flawlessly. The tales of luxury and comfort weren't just stories; they were lived experiences, meticulously curated by their team. From the minutest details of in-room services to the vast expanses of their curated landscapes, everything whispered of opulence and care.
As our trip neared its end, a feeling of melancholy settled. This wasn't just any vacation; it was a journey through the finest aspects of hospitality. I found myself doing something unprecedented – attempting to extend our stay. Though flight constraints nudged us back to reality, the mere consideration was a testament to the allure of Raffles Udaipur.
