What matters here is Due date not bill date. If your due date is 9th so 4 days before 5th it will get scheduled and actually be paid on 6th morning.

As you already know, the payment date matters for rewards, not the scheduled date. Determining the payment date based on only the scheduled date will not help pinpoint it precisely.

Have you ever wondered how HDFC decides the scheduled / payment date for autopay? I have figured it out.

Here is my observation: The payment date is the third working day prior to the due date. Last month, there was a Sunday (holiday) in between, so it was paid on the 4th (4 days before) (due date was 8th April). This time, because there is no holiday in between, it will probably be paid on the 6th (3 days before) (due date is 9th May).

What matters here is Due date not bill date. If your due date is 9th so 4 days before 5th it will get scheduled and actually be paid on 6th morning.

This month it will follow the same, but not necessarily every month.

I can give it a shot, can you just confirm if the payment instantly fails at 6AM attempt or does it wait till maybe evening or next day to update about this? Because if it fails instantly then I will pay it through other route right away otherwise it would be a stressful day. 😶 And by when do you get the refund?

It will be a stressful day for you. Morning amount will be deducted, night you will get "Payment failed" SMS. Next day evening you get "Transaction reversed" SMS. You should get refund in 3 working day from day of bill payment as per my experience.

Very stressful day ahead. Specially the first time around and if the amount is quite high.
Even though HDFC alerts about txn failure latter on, mostly the next day, but you would get to know that the txn failed as bbps generally settles the txn immediately and you won’t get the received alert from sbi if it failed.
HDFC confirms about the refund of the failed txn mostly in a day or two. But the actual money comes to your account in 3-4 days.
However everything is automatic. SBI Billpay fails and the refund happens. Nothing needs to be done. If you have double the fund then try it, otherwise just skip.
