Looks like a vanilla RuPay? 50xx ...

I got a 60xx debit card from Utkarsh Bank, which is said to be domestic only. Another pure RuPay?
Yes, RuPay Card BINs start with 508, 60, 81, 82 (accept on any RuPay network in India and outside India like Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Maldives etc).

Cards front side written domestic only or Valid only in India but few banks already upgrade their system to accept globally on RuPay network.

RuPay Discover BINs start with 65 and RuPay JCB BINs start with 35.

How is the forex rate of rupay compared to visa/mc? (not talking about markup, just pure exchange rate)
When you use RuPay global network then transactions are settled in Indian rupees. No currency exchange.

RuPay-JCB Global Card network currency exchange rate is better than visa/mc.

RuPay-Discover Global Card network - well, some people said best and some people said worst. Use it yourself and tell here.

Am I right in understanding that only government banks are providing NCMC cards for now? (Paytm is an exception private entity)

Also, I heard that government officially tied up with paytm to provide ncmc cards via NaMo route stations. That means big changes coming to paytm NCMC card.

You can no more recharge Paytm transit card with a Rupay Credit Card btw. Only UPI and Paytm wallet options are available now.

Paytm is a bank.

ICICI, Axis bank, HDFC bank, Yes bank, RBL bank also launched NCMC Prepaid RuPay Metro cards.

All metros, buses issue tender, if your bid is lowest, you will get the tender and you will be NCMC acquiring bank.

Quick question: if I get NCMC BoB debit card, and enable "tap-to-pay" on it, will I be able to use it in Bengaluru and Chennai Metros?
Few people told online contactless also working but if you want to use NCMC transaction then first you need to load money on offline contactless wallet.

Oh. My understanding is that a NCMC card will work on all metros across India. Is that not the case? because I really can't find any such cards by the private banks. Yes, there are some specific cards for a state or city but nothing common.

NCMC card work everywhere, all metros, buses etc.

Private banks only issue RuPay NCMC Prepaid cards (Paytm bank RuPay NCMC card is also Prepaid wallet card).

Here few examples RuPay NCMC prepaid card launch by Private banks.

Anyway, NPCI k white paper me Credit card also mentioned there but i think currently you can directly use your CC on Metro AFC gates. No prepaid option available on RuPay Credit cards.
I tried using PNB Rupay Platinum NCMC Credit Card but it didn't worked. Has anyone got it working for them?

Thanks @Abhishek012 . The examples you gave above are city specific cards, like hdfc for Pune metro, Axis for mumbai metro. Would these cards, for example, work in Delhi metro?
I think hdfc for Pune metro, Axis for mumbai metro is closed loop. I dnt know about latest update.

RBL for Bangalore Metro (NAMMA Metro) and Mumbai BEST buses Yes bank Chalo Card is NCMC card and work in Delhi metro.

We few more years all cards will work all metros in India.

Some facts I have learned so far:
  • All NCMC cards need to be activated. This is a one time procedure that requires tapping at a NCMC terminal before you start your first trip and you do not need to activate it multiple times for different cities or services (metro/bus). Debit card NCMC activation is separate from regular debit card activation so you will need to go through the same procedure as prepaid NCMC cards for it. This activation cannot be done online, reason is the point below.
  • NCMC cards use an offline wallet and they need to be tapped at a balance update terminal (which can either be self service or assisted by staff, depends on the system) if you load money to it online EVERY TIME.
  • If you are entering a closed loop system such as a metro and want to update balance, you need to tap it either BEFORE you tap at the entry AFC or AFTER you tap it at the exit AFC, it will not work if you are between a trip. At least that is the case for Mumbai. The AFCs for NCMC do not have balance update facility as that procedure is online while the AFCs work offline.
  • NCMC balance update or money load cannot be done at ticket counters for most metro lines. You need to find the specific NCMC terminal or visit the customer service desk. Hence, I recommend loading a large amount at once (e.g. 500 rupees).
  • All newly constructed metro lines in India (inaugurated in the last 2 years or so) were built in mind with native NCMC support and usually do not support any other form of prepaid cards.
  • Maximum balance you can hold in NCMC is ₹2000 (at least as of today). This is also the maximum limit per transaction if your card allows setting the maximum.
  • One NCMC per person. You cannot tap it multiple times for multiple people. You might be able to use the same card for buying a ticket on some metro lines but will be a regular RuPay prepaid online transaction not NCMC. For most lines I would recommend using Paytm or their specific app to buy QR code tickets or cold hard cash cash if you have multiple passengers with you.
  • A lot of the older lines have added NCMC support however the older system still remains the primary system (as there are lakhs of old cards issued). So for a lot of these older metro lines you have to specifically tap in and out at the designated AFC gates which have NCMC support. These gates were newly installed in the last couple of years only.
  • Due to the above point, there will be some inconveniences. For Delhi metro, one major complaint is that you have to go to customer service desk for updating balance and that has a long queue. For Mumbai metro, I just use the self service balance update terminal on the new lines with no queue. This terminal is accessible between the security check and entry AFC gates. For chennai metro, parking is only available with the regular metro card and not NCMC.
  • If it's a NCMC card it will have a RuPay logo. Chalo (for Mumbai buses) sells both regular cards and Chalo NCMC cards and they are NOT the same.
  • All of the newly constructed metro lines have tied up with a bank (PSU or private), to make it easy for the regular junta to get a metro card. You do not need to go for that bank tie up/city branded card at all, all NCMC cards will work the same.
  • All of the advertised discounts for the city branded metro card work for all NCMC cards so far. So 10% discount on Mumbai Metro during non peak hours is also applicable on Paytm transit card.
  • Some services will charge MDR on the ticket price for NCMC. For example, Mumbai BEST buses (e.g., for a ₹6 ticket, ₹6.18 will be deducted). These tickets are really cheap and subsidized heavily so please do not cry about it.
  • The PSU bank debit cards will have either a separate portal or an offline wallet load option in netbanking. It will not deduct from savings account as that is an online transaction.
  • NCMC will EVENTUALLY work for all transit services but that is simply not the case as of today. Do not assume it will work on all buses and metros. I have yet to check if and when Mumbai Monorail or other Mumbai buses (MBMT/TMT) currently support/will support NCMC anytime soon.
  • Minimum balance on NCMC cards is ₹50. If you go below this, there is a risk of getting fined. This is to cover the minimum ticket cost for most metros, sort of like a security deposit. So, in case you tap in and don't tap out they can still deduct the maximum ticket cost at the end of the day.
  • There is no system for concessional fares/passes on NCMC cards as far as I can tell. Honestly, I am fine with it as most of these systems are heavily subsidized already.
I have faced trouble specifically with SBI RuPay JCB debit card only so far. No terminal so far is able to activate it for NCMC and I cannot load the offline wallet on this card as it has not been activated. Native RuPay and Rupay Discover might work just fine.

Overall, for Mumbai NCMC is really convenient as it is supported on all metro and BEST buses. The fact that it is offline means that you will not have to deal with apps (except for balance loading).

Didn't work for me on Bengaluru Metro. Said to contact Bank/Customer Care.
Just to clarify - Did it not work at the AFC or at the NCMC terminal/customer service desk?

AFC won't work unless the card is activated and has money in the offline wallet. So are you saying that they could not activate NCMC and load money on your card?
