For Cred, the email access is needed in case you want your statement details. They do open the statement PDF. The statement basics like total due and mimimum due can be gathered from the SMS texts. So if you want the statement to be accessed on Cred, then give mail access.
It no surpise that they are able to tell you your total monthly cashback and reward points as they have access to the statement.

Same thing in savesage also if you give access they can fetch your total rewards points also
 
Yes, CRED does parse your statement PDF once you’ve given consent for CRED Protect. That’s how it is able to show not just bill/due date, but also spends, cashback summary, and category insights.

If you’re not comfortable, you can always revoke CRED Protect access from the app settings....
