Ex-US NSA Bolton warns Trump’s India tariffs could be ‘enormous mistake’

US India Tariffs

Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has criticized President Donald Trump for jeopardizing decades of American efforts to shift India away from Russia and China, citing the steep tariffs imposed on India over its purchase of Russian oil.

Bolton has called out Trump's bias towards China over India and said it could be an "enormous mistake".

Trump briefly entered a trade conflict with China in April but has paused further escalation while awaiting a potential agreement. Meanwhile, he imposed tariffs exceeding 50% on India, including a 25% secondary tariff, claiming it was in response to India's continued purchases of Russian oil, which he argued supports Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine.

"Trump's leniency on the Chinese and heavy-handed tariffs on India jeopardize decades of American efforts to bring India away from Russia and China," the former aide of the President asserted.

The tariffs resulted in the “worst outcome” for the United States, according to John Bolton, as India responded “very negatively,” partly because it noticed China was not facing similar penalties. Bolton made the remarks during an interview with CNN.

"That shows exactly what I think could be the worst outcome for the United States, that India has reacted very negatively, as you might expect, to these tariffs related to Russian oil purchases, in part because they see that China has not been tariffed," Bolton said.

"And the irony here is that while the secondary tariffs against India are intended to hurt Russia, it could push India back closer to Russia, and ironically closer to China, perhaps negotiating together, against the US tariff efforts," he further added.

US foreign policy expert and former trade official Christopher Padilla has cautioned that the tariffs could cause lasting strain in India-US relations.

In an Op-Ed for The Hill, Bolton had earlier said that Trump's leniency towards Beijing could be seen as sacrificing the US's strategic interests in this "zeal for a deal" with President Xi Jinping.

"The White House seems headed toward more lenient treatment for Beijing on tariff rates and other metrics than it imposed on New Delhi. If so, it will be a potentially enormous mistake," his opinion piece read.

Trump deploys National Guard to Washington DC as he pledges crime crackdown

The White House has just released the text of the executive orders that Trump signed today aimed at tackling crime in Washington DC.

In the order, Trump says that "rising violence in the capital now urgently endangers public servants, citizens, and tourists, disrupts safe and secure transportation and the proper functioning of the Federal Government".

The order puts the DC police under the control of the federal government because of an "emergency".

It also states that the "Attorney General shall regularly update me on the status of the special conditions of an emergency nature that exist in the District of Columbia that require the use of the Metropolitan Police Force for Federal purposes".

"The magnitude of the violent crime crisis places the District of Columbia among the most violent jurisdictions in the United States," Trump's executive order states.
