UPI Fraud... FYI&A

ccdc

TF Ace
I had ordered medicine from netmeds website. It was scheduled to be received today. Received a phone call from unknown number today. The Individual introduced himself as Nitin Kumar Singh. The individual knew my name and the total amount i had paid for the order. He told me that i have a refund of Rs. 3 on this particular order. Further he told me to pay him my order value minus 3 and i will get the entire order amount as refund afterwards. I told him ok since i knew this was a fraud call and i wanted his QR code to know his name. Upon entering the UPI id in Gpay application, i learnt his legal name is Nitin Khan. I called him once again and told him why he did such things with other ppl. To that he started abusing me....you can see in the whatsapp chat as well that he's livid with me!!! calling me all sorts of "adjectives"!!. I suspect that the documents used by this individual to open the bank account linked to the upi id might be falsified/forged in some manner. This is because i havent seen or heard any male having a hindu first name and a muslim last name. Unless he might be a convert and changed his last name and kept his OG first name.

I read about the same issue on a different platform, Where people ordering from Tira were getting such calls asking for payment, They had all the details, like Name, address, Order Amount etc, Their delivery Partner is also Blue Dart...

interestingly...netmeds and tira are both owned/operated by reliance retail....food for thought!!!

I thought this was a common knowledge but I will reiterate. Delivery Guys are paid a few bucks for each contact they share. Not only delivery guys but the warehouse (they are mostly private franchises) sell them by the bulk and everyone does it (amazon, flipkart you name it).

Source: An aquaintance runs a warehouse for flipkart. Even speedpost does it. and Bank employees do it too. These days most PSU banks hire a private guy who does most of the work while the actual taxpayer funded employees waste oxygen, and he takes care of your data......Private bank employees are not paid and competent enough to care about this shit....

So it's not about where it got leaked, it's about why get surprised about it. Learn to abuse and harass back....this is India, at least in China you get something back for giving up your privacy.....

I too had similar incident with Netmeds. Got call next day of order telling my payment got canceled due to refund. Some weird reason. He told me all my details like name, mobile, order amount. He told me to pay via QR and sent QR code on my whatsapp. I knew it was a scam so I spoke to him softly. I asked him few details about order like order number so he made excuses, asked him what medicine is part of order so again he made excuses and couldn't tell me about it. I opened up to him gently that you should not do such fraud and do some other genuine work. I asked him who is leaking order details from Netmeds so he told me that someone from Netmeds company is selling order details for Rs. 200 each. He also told me that sir subah se bowni nhi hui he pls transfer atleast Rs 50. These guys would do anything to get money from people. I disconnected the call. But later after 15 minutes received another same call from different person claiming refund on Netmeds order. I didn't want to waste my time so disconnected.

Data privacy is a myth. As we move towards agentic AI world, this is only going to increase. Our data is spread out everywhere.
Only thing we can do is be safe ourselves.
  • Keep strong passwords,
  • enable 2FA,
  • do not click any link,
  • do not open any downloads,
  • do not attend/entertain any unknown calls
  • do not share OTPs
Howmuchever safe they seems to be. Howmuchever genuine they appear. Never trust anyone in digital world.

Even Netmeds is aware of such fraud. I received email from Netmeds few days back. See email screenshots.
