Should I close my oldest CC HDFC Times Platinum with 12L+limit?

TF Buzz
I need advice specific to my scenario. Been stressing over it for many days now.

My oldest credit card (from 2016), HDFC Times Platinum (Mastercard) is also my first and only HDFC credit card. I can't seem to get any core HDFC card due to it. Reading into forums here and elsewhere I have realized that the only way to move forward is to close this card and re-apply for a core card after a few (3-6?) months.

The current limit on this card is 12L+ and I am planning to reach out to the corporate spoc once and if that doesn't work then the credit card email once asking for a direct upgrade. This will be on the back of my salary account being with HDFC for more than a decade, the salary being 1.75l+ and cibil score 790+. I doubt all this will matter to them so eventually wondering -
If I must close this card or not? If I do then what must be the next target (Regalia, DCB etc.) and when?
What are the chances of being able to qualify for or achieve that target?
What will be the impact on score and its cascading impact on qualifying for good credit/loan deals in future?

The only other card I have is Yes Premia (Elite+ on Mastercard) with a limit of 5.5L+ from start of 2023 and a free Rupay add-on to the same with shared limit from an even later date. No other credit cards and no active loans as such but planning on an auto loan in near future (tentative) and I actively rely on credit card for most expenses. The limit on my HDFC credit card feels like a cushion and is really hard earned in the sense that I have often maxed out utilization and paid off to get limit enhancements starting from around 40K limit at beginning if I recollect correctly.

I have recently (few days ago) applied for SBI Simplyclick (on Visa) with the view of securing SBI discounts on websites like Amazon, MMT, etc. Not sure where that application will go. Any guidance is appreciated. I have been reading a lot for the past few days and can't figure out anymore on how to go about it. Is this all even worth it?
I mean to put it simply, I have HDFC and Yes Bank cards that allow me to secure discounts on websites plus given me decent discounts on BMS, Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon, MMT, Eazydinner, etc. from time to time anyway so not sure. Lost, hence posted here. Been lurking this forum for a long time now.

Btw none of these are LTF, I have preferred account with HDFC - not that it matters and for me ltf ICICI is out of reach due to my current company not being empaneled with them and their paid cards aren't worth it except the discount they offer - an approach I am now starting to doubt.

AFAIK, HDFC journey is typically Millenia, Regalia, Regalia Gold, DCB and then Infinia. With what I read above you should be eligible for Regalia. Take half day leave and visit 3 branches this month end to check who listens to you and helps.
Cashback - HSBC Liv+, SBI cashback and the newly launched CSB Jupiter+ may be considered
Car - Start an RD for 6 months/1 year, buy the car using Axis Atlas and enjoy Sri Lanka/Maldives/HK holiday in reward points
Cheers

So when I started working and got this card - the ecosystem and available cards were different. And I had no clue to what is what. Even today it is not difficult to get lost in false advertising, complex marketing names, difficult to find terms and changes that they bring in at specific points in time.

I don't have the time and energy anymore to go about it offline, that too at multiple branches. That used to be and I would escalate, argue, raise voice, get it done but I feel I shouldn't have to continue that. Not worth it. Right now I need to make a decision with respect to the best option and then the next and so on. Then try each one of them with minimal "hard" pursuit. Hoping the worst can be that I close the card, lose my credit limit and then wait a half to year to reapply for a core card, say Regalia Gold and then work it from there.

SBI Cashback is on my radar. Depending on approval for my Simply Click application, I will wait half a year and apply for SBI cashback. This is to get my foot in the door for SBI discounts which are not available on SBI Cashback. Is CSB Jupiter+ and HSBC Liv+ any better than SBI Cashback? I haven't heard a mention of those in some of the popular threads here. Most people glorify SBI CB.

Axis Atlas - mostly a travel oriented card, I am not sure if I want to pay for it. And I don't have any relation with Axis bank to believe I will get it for free. Don't want another CIBIL hit right now by just filling an application and hoping it to be offered LTF in negotiation. What you are suggesting sounds like a very tempting plan but I am hoping there must be other cards that can offer the same or close enough, no?

I have emailed to the HDFC corporate spoc today for my firm. I have a strong feeling I won't hear back. Will email on the id you mentioned tomorrow. Need your inputs here -

  1. Should I ask for a new/second card instead of upgrade and then see what they reply, then ask for an upgrade?
  2. If I ask for an upgrade then upgrade to which card given the details I have shared in my first post?
  3. Should I also mention LTF?
  4. Most importantly, what happens to the 12L+ limit on my existing card?

The idea is to try preserve it. Infact I love the BMS offer and Times Prime membership benefit on my Times Platinum card so it will be great to preserve that as well but I know HDFC for some weird reason doesn't allow a core card when you have a co-branded card, right?

in the same boat, have HDFC salary account for 15+ years, struck with hdfc money back CC (12L Limit) for 10 years now,no LTF upgrade. I am fed up and gave up.

Lets find out an answer then in this thread. I am sure the experienced folks here can guide us to a good shore as far as this problem is concerned. Also what you mean you gave up? Did you close the card and account or just let it be? I don't mind keeping my Times Platinum card and paying for it since I know I can get higher benefit from BMS alone in return even after paying the annual fees. If they agree to give me a second card which will be a core card atleast at Regalia Gold level although I am hoping for a DCB Metal then I wouldn't mind paying for it for a couple of years eventually asking them to make it LTF - atleast Regalia Gold if not DCB. Is that a bad idea?

1. You can ask them, but they won't give you 2nd card. So it's better to ask for upgrade.
2. It's your choice and preference. You can go with Regalia or milennia according to your need.
3. Yes, do mention, but as per my knowledge, they are only giving FYF upgrades
4.Old limit will get transferred to your new card and the old card will be closed

As long as they transfer my limit, I am mostly good with that. I will have to compare millennia and Regalia Gold to see which of these comes closer to the Times Platinum in terms of offers I use most.

I think upto a Regalia Gold card ltf is warranted although can't be sure. Will mention it. Will ask them both if they can give another card or alternatively upgrade. Thanks again for your guidance. It isn't worth writing to the first level email right?

Best of luck with the upgrade procedure.
Don't ask first level, they are not worthy.
Directly ask the grievance or priority team for quick and better resolution

Thanks and since I have to email them the preferred name of upgrade card - If I am targeting SBI cashback later on then millennia doesn't make as much sense right? And Diners Club Privilege any better? I am now researching that, comparing it against my requirements before I send that email.
And Diners Club is also a core card right?
