Biggest challenges in national highway/expressway driving in India:
1. Trucks driving in the rightmost lane
2. Trucks often change lanes without using indicators
3. Even when they do use indicators, they ignore vehicles behind them - their speed, distance, etc.
4. It’s not just trucks, many car drivers also don’t use indicators.
5. All of this is happening due to corruption at the RTO level - people are getting driving licenses without proper knowledge of traffic rules or the necessary driving skills.

RTO is the birth place of mainstream corruption
 
And then the infamous creta drivers flash their headlights and drive with high beam.. dont want comment on their honking..😝
 
In this post I am not trying to justify any action of the truck drivers. But please think from their POV.

The left lane is often used by commercial local buses, two wheelers and what not. Often vehicles enter suddenly into the highways from the local roads. Also in many places you may find vehicles have stopped just beside the road and people roaming around. Driving in such conditions with goods weighing several tonnes is a recipe for disaster. If a truck tries to stop abruptly like cars it will most likely topple. Also consider the situations like brake failure or out of control trucks where it is easier to stop by hitting the divider, because on the left side there will be shops, people or even ditches.

Rigorous trainings and compulsory assessments periodically are required for the drivers of all types of vehicles. Along with this the highways needs to be expanded to at least 6 lanes (3 lanes per side). The highway barriers need to be stronger, road intersections reduced considerably by using flyovers, identifying blind entry/exits and correct them. Many of these are being done in the NHs. Also bulk goods transport needs to shift to railways or waterways to reduce the burden on the roads.
