Exploring Vietnam, Malaysia & Thailand with United’s Excursionist Perk and Luxurious Stays at Accor Hotels

For me, travel has never been about escaping the hustle, rather it's about embracing the world as part of my everyday life. So when it came time to plan my next adventure, I didn’t need to look far. While many dream of European escapades, my heart beats for Southeast Asia - a region that effortlessly blends warm hospitality, breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and incredible food. So let me take you to relive the journey with me!

This time, I embarked on a two-week journey across Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand. Each destination added its own flavour to the trip, whether it was wandering through vibrant cities, relaxing by serene beaches, or indulging in local cuisine that hits all the right notes.

I’m someone who enjoys the planning process as much as the trip itself. Meticulously mapping out flights and hotels in advance has always helped me score the best award redemptions with minimal flexibility. But before I dive into the unforgettable memories and cultural gems I collected along the way, let’s start with the part that travel nerds like me truly geek out over—the behind-the-scenes of how I booked my flights and stays.

Booking the Flights:

As the title hints, I used United Miles to stitch together this multi-country itinerary. United’s “Excursionist Perk” was a game changer - allowing me to get one leg (Da Nang to Kuala Lumpur) for just the taxes. My full route looked like this: Kolkata–Hanoi, Da Nang–Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur–Bangkok, and Krabi–Kolkata. All of this cost me just 1,10,000 United Miles, transferred from Marriott Bonvoy. We flew with Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways in the economy. While United miles have devalued over time, sweet spots like these still make them worth using.

We also had two revenue flights: Hanoi to Da Nang on VietJet (booked via MMT using the AMEX Gold Charge for 5x rewards), and Bangkok to Phuket on Thai Airways. Smart redemptions and reward multipliers really helped stretch the value of this trip.

Another standout feature I made full use of was United’s free cancellation and rebooking perk. It’s incredibly useful as I changed my itinerary twice without paying a single rupee extra. In fact, due to airport changes, I even got a partial refund on taxes! Just a heads-up: to make the most of this, it helps to have a U.S. address on your United account and preferably use a non-Indian card for payments, as Indian cards often face issues on their platform.

You can also modify your United flights just by chatting with them via live messages—and honestly, I preferred this over calling. I had to make a change, and while the website wasn’t letting me process it (thanks to a glitch), the chat team quickly took care of it without any fuss. I was being asked to redeem the entire miles amount again, which clearly wasn’t supposed to happen. Thankfully, the agent on chat fixed it.

But just when I thought all was sorted, I received an email bombshell—my flight had been changed, and now I was required to pay more miles, or else the booking would be cancelled. Total bummer! I had no choice but to call United.

What followed was a rollercoaster—five call transfers later, I finally reached a senior executive who was not only helpful but also admitted she’d never seen this issue before in her 30 years at United. She took ownership, called the MileagePlus team herself, and sorted everything out. My revised ticket was issued without any additional cost.

Yes, I was on call for 1.5 hours, but it got resolved—so if something like this ever happens to you, now you know what to do.

I paid approximately ₹21,000 in taxes for my award flight, ₹13,161 for a VietJet flight including check-in baggage, and ₹8,869 for a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok to Phuket.

Booking the Hotels:

Accor was my hotel chain of choice and I went all in on comfort and luxury. Across the trip, I stayed in six Presidential Suites and other top-tier suites, of which except one, weren’t complimentary upgrades. In a few cases, I booked the second-highest suite and negotiated paid upgrades at significantly lower rates than advertised. At one property, a referral from another hotel got me 40% off the Presidential Suite without even asking, it is proof that genuine connections can open doors you never expect.

All the stays were booked using Accor points, mostly earned through Axis cards - especially during the golden days, and later through Magnus Burgundy. For me, this card still offers unbeatable value in India when it comes to travel rewards.

When it comes to room upgrades, I always make it a point to email the hotel in advance—whether I'm hoping for a complimentary upgrade or even a paid one. And this time was no different. Hotels often offer amazing deals, especially if it’s a special occasion—and yes, my birthday definitely worked in my favour!

That said, I’d genuinely suggest not to go overboard or push the staff too much. Whatever upgrades or perks they can offer, they usually do so in one go. Keeping things professional and respectful goes a long way—and more often than not, it pays off beautifully.

I used a total of 879,000 Accor points to cover all hotel stays, including room upgrades, food & beverages, and miscellaneous expenses. Additionally, I spent ₹11,056 out of pocket for my entire stay across 9 Accor properties.

Airport Transfers, Cabs & Tours:

For a smoother travel experience, I booked airport transfers through Klook, costing ₹11,730. In addition, I spent ₹9,467 on cab fares across three countries and ₹5,139 for a day trip to Hoi An.

The Beginning of the Journey:

Our adventure kicked off from Kolkata with Singapore Airlines. Having flown their First Class before, this economy experience on their B737 was a contrasting one, but honestly, still impressive. The seats were comfortable, the meal was good, and the crew, as always, made the flight feel special. Despite booking 6 months in advance, we couldn’t get the morning connection to Hanoi, so we took an afternoon flight with a long 9-hour layover in Singapore.

Now, I don’t hold any elite status with any airlines, so my travel saviour here was the good old Priority Pass - specifically the one from IndusInd Pioneer Heritage Metal, which offers unlimited lounge access (even for add-ons). Think it’s just for lounges? Nope - it’s a mini travel hack book!

We were at T2, where the real fun is. First stop: TranSpa, beside the Ambassador Lounge and part of the Ambassador Transit Hotel. It officially opens at 11 AM, but here’s a tip - the friendly staff at Ambassador Transit Hotel told us they often open by 10 AM and suggested we come by 9:30.

With some time to kill (and tummies to fill), we walked over to Asian Street Kitchen, just 500m away. Priority Pass gives you SGD 33.5 credit per card, and yes, you can combine credits across cards - we used two to rack up SGD 67! No combos, just pick anything from the menu. You get a feast worth around SGD 56 without tax and trust me, you’ll be more than full. Just check the photos!

Asian Street Kitchen

Next, we thought of exploring more. We skipped Kaveri (a crowd favourite) and went to TGM instead. They had some decent set menus and even a few buffet items. The food was okay, but since we were already stuffed, we only tasted a bit and decided Asian Street Kitchen would win our vote anytime.

Post food coma, we returned to TranSpa. Wifey got a haircut while I relaxed with a head and shoulder massage. After 4 hours in economy, it felt heavenly (okay okay, not snobbish - I promise!). The haircut, by the way, was fantastic. It’s clearly popular too as while waiting, we saw six people register for one.

Finally, we made our way to an actual lounge - Ambassador Lounge, right next door. It’s basic but did the job. We skipped the food (still too full!), charged our devices, caught a quick nap, took a refreshing shower, and just like that - it was time to catch our flight to Hanoi.

Day 1–3, Hanoi:

After another lovely flight with Singapore Airlines, we landed in Hanoi at 5:56 PM, just about 20 minutes behind schedule. Immigration was a bit slow, but manageable. Once we had our bags, we headed straight to our car. I activated my FlexiRoam SIM (3GB data pack) - a complimentary perk with MasterCard World Elite—super handy! It helped me connect with our Klook airport transfer driver, which turned out to be cheaper than Grab and just as smooth. We also picked up a local SIM for the week—super affordable and came with 25GB data and unlimited local calls. Pretty impressive!

Our chauffeur from Klook greeted us, and off we went to the hotel. It was raining by then and almost dark, but Hanoi’s lit-up streets looked magical. By 8 PM, we arrived at Hotel de l’Opera – MGallery, where I’d booked the L’Opera Grand Suite With Opera House View just for the balcony view of the iconic Hanoi Opera House. Worth it? Totally. Though technically smaller than the L’Opera Grand Suite which is 1 category below it, this one is the real beauty. Built in 1911, the hotel oozes character and charm. We had a hearty dinner and tasted Vietnamese coffee for the first time—strong, sweet, and so addictive!

View from the balcony of our suite

Later, we strolled around for a bit, but unfortunately, the suite’s AC malfunctioned. Despite complaining, the Duty Manager didn’t offer a room change or any service recovery. No bidet/jetspray either, just a heads-up! Breakfast the next morning was delicious, and though the initial experience wasn’t great, the General Manager later refunded all my points and promised to fix things when I mailed them after coming back from the trip. A kind and classy move.

Day 2 began with us checking into Grand Mercure Hanoi, and the contrast was unreal. New property, top-notch staff, and an overall exceptional experience. Though we arrived 4 hours early, our room wasn’t ready but no worries, they escorted us to the Executive Lounge with drinks on offer. Of course, you already know what we ordered… Vietnamese coffee, again! They even offered a complimentary meal, which we politely declined as we were still stuffed.

Ms. Phan, the Guest Experience Manager, gave us a map and suggested places to explore and restaurants to try. Our room was ready within 90 minutes, and we were upgraded to their Presidential Suite at a great rate which was about 30% off on top of the member discount. This upgrade was arranged a week earlier of our arrival. It was stunning with a 270-degree city view, beautifully designed interiors, and a rooftop bar perfect for cocktails with a view. Honestly, the hotel deserves MGallery branding—I even told the GM so.

Living room at GM Hanoi's PS

After some rest, we booked a spa session (so needed), grabbed a drink at the lounge, and then headed out. First stop: Temple of Literature—we skipped the guided tour. Then a quick stop at the Museum of Fine Arts, which was sadly closed. We hopped into a Grab to Hoan Kiem Lake—a serene spot perfect for an evening stroll with a temple on a tiny island and mostly pedestrian-only paths. Great for families too!

Next, we visited the much-talked-about Hanoi Train Street. The train was delayed by an hour, so we picked a cozy café (no pressure, no pushy staff), enjoyed snacks and drinks, and waited. And wow—it was worth it! The train zipped past just 2 feet from us. The café owner even placed beer caps on the track and gifted us the flattened souvenirs. A charming little memory to take home.

We ended the night with drinks at the hotel’s rooftop bar before calling it a day. The turn-down service was done, and we slept like babies.

Day 3 started with us waking at 8:30 AM and heading straight to breakfast. The spread was modest but tasty. We chose to take it slow—some rest, some "us time", and then, with full energy, we were ready to explore again. After a late pizza lunch (so good!), we had high tea with sparkling wine and tiny pastries before setting out.

Imperial Citadel of Thang Long

We totally forgot it was Monday—most places were closed! But we still visited the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, Ho Chi Minh Museum, Hanoi Flag Tower, and wrapped up at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, just in time for a gorgeous sunset behind it.

St. Joseph’s Cathedral

With an early morning flight to Da Nang coming up, we returned to the hotel for dinner, claimed our complimentary rooftop drink (which we usually forget!), and soaked in the night view. Packing wasn’t fun, but hey, necessary evil.

Rooftop bar of GM Hanoi

Day 4 began bright and early at 5 AM—yes, even for us late risers. But the sunrise from the suite window? Pure bliss. Our car was ready, and just like that, we were off to the airport for our next chapter.

Day 4–5, French Village, Da Nang:

This leg, we flew VietJet. Originally booked for 12:30 PM, the flight got rescheduled to 9 AM. A blessing in disguise once we calculated everything. After a short 45-min ride to Hanoi’s domestic terminal and a quick check-in process, we headed to the SH Premium Lounge—a surprisingly nice airside lounge with delicious F&B. The flight was on time (thankfully, no drama with LCCs this time), and after just an hour, we touched down in Da Nang. From flight to exit, including baggage, took barely 20 minutes. Our chauffeur was already waiting.

We headed straight to Ba Na Hills, which took about an hour. The base station of Mercure Ba Na Hills was bustling, and sadly, the priority check-in wasn’t functioning as expected—we had to wait around 30 mins. Once checked in, we grabbed our discounted cable car + attraction combo tickets (a perk for hotel guests) and were escorted up the hill. The cable car ride was a peaceful 40 minutes with stunning mountain views.

Living Room of the PS of Mercure Bana Hills

Upon reaching the hilltop, hotel staff guided us to a priority check-in desk, which was quick this time. We had originally booked the Executive Suite but were offered a Presidential Suite upgrade for a great upgrade price—usually reserved for 2-night stays, but we got lucky. This duplex suite was tucked away, unnamed, like a hidden gem inside a French castle. Beautiful interiors, a touch of old-world charm, and they even decorated the suite for my birthday. Truly special!

Bedroom of PS of Mercure Bana Hills

Post check-in, we went for lunch and straight to the amusement park. The highlight? A roller coaster you can control! It fits two and is the best excuse for some fun “revenge” on your partner (all in good fun, of course!). Pro tip: grab combo tickets early in the morning—they’re much cheaper.

Cable Cars to Bana Hills

Next stop was the Golden Hand Bridge. Just before sunset, we took the cable car again and caught the most surreal golden-blue sky. Flags of many nations lined the way, and we proudly held the Tiranga high—it was one of those moments you never forget. The bridge and flower gardens were breathtaking. As the sun dipped, a cool breeze kicked in—definitely bring a jacket!

Golden Hand Bridge

Back at the hotel, we rested and enjoyed views of the village from our room, watching people dance and kids having the time of their lives. The energy was contagious. As night fell and the crowd thinned, the place turned into a quiet dreamland. We had dinner by the window—thanks to the team for reserving that perfect spot—and then wandered through the lit-up French Village. It was calm, cool, and picture-perfect.

Bana Hills during night time

Day 5 began with breakfast at the exclusive venue for Platinum, Diamond, and PS guests. Quiet and elegant with a large spread. After breakfast, I went out for some photos while my wife relaxed a bit. By noon, we were ready to descend via cable car. We hailed a Grab and headed to our next stop—Novotel Da Nang, Han River.

View attachment IMG_7221.mp4

Day 5–7, Da Nang:

An hour later, we reached Novotel Da Nang. I picked this place especially for the room: their Corner Suite with a 270° view from 29th floor—river, sea, and hills all in one frame. After arrival, we were escorted to the Executive Lounge, where Ms. Rosa took great care of us. Even the GM came by to chat and shared that the hotel has a PS, though currently not managed by Novotel. They plan to bring it under their wing in 2 years post-renovation. That’s going to be exciting!

The room was stunning, and we decided to take a rest day. We had lunch at the all-day dining, then indulged in a spa session—upscale by Novotel standards and surprisingly relaxing. With the AccorPlus discount, it was an absolute steal.

View from our Corner Suite

Day 6 kicked off with breakfast, after which we booked a Hoi An tour via Klook. Our guide offered a round-trip transfer, cheaper than Grab. First, we did the Coconut Boat Ride—fun, informative, and full of surprises. We saw coconut crabs, learned about the boats’ history, and laughed through the “coconut boat dance”—a wild, spinning ride that we totally enjoyed.

Next, our guide took us to Hoi An Old Town. We chose our lantern, wrote our wishes, lit a candle inside, and floated it down the river from the boat. The entire town looked like a Disney movie—pure magic. After strolling around the old streets soaking in the beauty, we returned to the hotel, had a delicious dinner, and called it a night.

We had Mr. Minh Lee as our guide, who happens to live right in Hoi An Old Town. He was absolutely fantastic—super knowledgeable, friendly, and ensured we had a smooth, well-guided experience throughout. He also accepts direct bookings and mentioned that he can offer better pricing on tour packages when booked directly through him. You can contact him on WhatsApp at +84 792602287 to plan your Hoi An and Da Nang itinerary with ease!

Day 7 was our check-out day, but Novotel generously offered a 4 PM late check-out since our flight was in the evening. We took it easy, packed up, and when our chauffeur arrived, it was time to say goodbye.

Da Nang and Hoi An were both absolutely incredible—each offering something unique. We left with full hearts and a silent promise to return again someday.

Day 8–10, Kuala Lumpur:

Our Day 7 began with a quick 30-minute ride to Da Nang Airport. The flight to Singapore was from Terminal 2. After completing the formalities, we checked into the CIP Orchid Lounge—not airside, but hands down the best F&B among all lounges we’d visited on this trip. The flight was on time and again with Singapore Airlines, but this time we had a 10-hour overnight layover—something I’d suggest avoiding unless you're flying premium cabins or have airline status with access to better lounges that offer sleeping areas.

After landing at Changi, we headed straight to Asian Kitchen for a quick meal and then began lounge and restaurant hopping to kill time. We tried Kaveri for an Indian thali—it was decent—and wrapped up with a coffee at TGM. Then we hit the SATS Premier Lounge—basic, but the massage chairs were a blessing! After three hours there, we moved to our familiar Ambassador Lounge. It had comfy seating, though not ideal for napping, but we managed to rest a bit. By 5 AM, we freshened up, showered, and boarded our early morning flight to Kuala Lumpur, which took less than an hour.

KL welcomed us with an hour-long immigration queue. Once we collected our luggage, we noticed one of our bags was damaged. But kudos to Singapore Airlines—they replaced it on the spot after a quick formality. That’s the level of service that sets them apart.

View of Twin Tower from Bedroom

Our chauffeur was already waiting and the hour-long drive to the city was a scenic delight. We reached Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur in no time. The lobby sits on the top of the building and at the base of 5 floors assigned to Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur, and the team was ready to welcome us warmly even though we arrived at 10:30 AM. While our room was being prepared, we were treated to cold towels, welcome drinks, and a selection of essential oils and pillows from their curated menus. They also confirmed our restaurant bookings in advance. Mrs Grim, the FOM was so kind and she assisted in everything thoroughly and also escorted us to our room.

Banyan Tree KL's PS' 2nd Floor Living Room

Originally booked in the Signature Sky Retreat, I had requested a paid upgrade, and they offered a deal too good to pass. We landed a stunning Duplex Suite with panoramic views of the city—Petronas Twin Towers, KL Tower, and beyond. It was practical, spacious, and completely worth the splurge!

After freshening up, we went for lunch at Torito, a newly launched rooftop restaurant with fabulous views and even better food. Even if you’re not a fan of hotel dining, this spot deserves a visit. Post lunch, we crashed for a solid 6-hour nap—much needed after that long layover. With rain pouring outside, staying in felt like the right call.

Dinner was at the signature Horizon Grill. Thankfully, we had reserved in advance because the place was fully booked. It's one of the most popular dining spots in KL and for good reason. Day 8 ended on a perfect note—quality time, comfort food, and some cozy movie time in our suite.

Day 9 started with a refreshing sleep and breakfast at Horizon Grill, which is a mix of buffet and à la carte—with views to match. After a relaxed start, we geared up for our shopping day. The direct connection from the hotel to Pavilion Mall made things super convenient.

breakfast with a view from Horizon Grill

After shopping, we returned for lunch at Torito (again—it’s that good!), followed by what turned out to be the best spa experience we’ve ever had at Banyan Tree Spa. With a 10% discount for in-house guests, it was the perfect mix of luxury and relaxation. Highly recommended.

That evening, we had a reservation at Vertigo, the hotel’s iconic rooftop bar. Before that, we met the General Manager, had a lovely chat, and found we shared a mutual love for travel and food. He gave us some amazing restaurant tips for our next destination.

Vertigo Rooftop Bar

Though it rained, the skies cleared just in time and we enjoyed our cocktails and small plates under the open sky. Afterwards, we went up to Vertigo Too, just a floor above. With a full 360° view of KL, it was magical. Even if you aren’t staying here, this spot is a must-visit in the evening.

Day 10 began with another peaceful sleep. Post breakfast, we planned a short outing to Batu Caves. After lunch, we booked a Grab, and within 30 minutes we were there. Despite the rain, we took blessings and returned for some quiet movie time.

Batu Caves

Later, the hotel team surprised us with birthday decorations in our room along with a delicious cake—it truly warmed our hearts. In the evening, we headed back to Vertigo, only to be surprised again—this time with a birthday celebration from the bar team! Felt incredibly special and blessed. We wrapped up the night with a final dinner at Horizon Grill—the perfect ending to a memorable stay.

Birthday Cake by BT KL's team

Day 11 began with a relaxed breakfast and our chauffeur already waiting downstairs. While we didn’t step out too much during these three days, it was everything we wanted it to be—slow, relaxing, and filled with quiet celebrations. Celebrating my birthday with my wife in this beautiful setting was truly priceless.

Day 11–13, Bangkok:

Day 11
started with heading to Kuala Lumpur Airport for our 1:20 PM flight to Bangkok. Thankfully, immigration was quick this time. Once through, we made our way to Sky Suite Lounge at Terminal 1 Satellite. The lounge had a good spread—some food, coffee, and a quiet vibe. We had pre-booked a napping room at the Kepler Club, which offers a comfortable 3-hour sleeping pod with an attached clean washroom. A great option for long layovers.

Soon it was time to board our flight with Thai Airways, and after a smooth 2-hour journey, we landed at BKK Airport. Immigration was surprisingly fast (much better than DMK), and our chauffeur was ready and waiting. Despite battling Bangkok’s traffic, we reached our hotel by 4 PM.

Bangkok's skyline from Sofitel Bangkok's PS

This time, I used a StayPlus night from AccorPlus, combined with an upgrade offer, to book the Imperial Suite/Presidential Suite at Sofitel Bangkok. It was pricey, but the panoramic view made every bit worth it. We soaked in the skyline from the rooftop jacuzzi with some sparkling—it was absolute bliss. Later, we headed to Club Millésime for some evening cocktails and light bites before stepping out for mall hopping and shopping (a must-do in Bangkok!). By the time we returned at 10:30 PM, we were loaded with bags and joy.

Rooftop Jacuzzi of Imperial Suite of Sofitel Bangkok

Although we were late for last orders at Belga, the hotel’s Belgian restaurant, the kind staff took our order anyway, and we enjoyed a hearty, delicious meal to end the day.

Day 12 began with a cozy sleep, followed by breakfast at their all-day dining restaurant, then a final coffee at Club Millésime. After that, we were all set to move to our next stay—Banyan Tree Bangkok. Their luxury chauffeur-driven car arrived right at Sofitel, as they offer round-trip transfers for Presidential Suite guests.

Thanks to a kind soul we met last year, we got a generous 40% off the Best Available Rate through a friends & family offer. Genuine connections truly matter—I never asked, but was gifted the rate, and I'm sincerely grateful. On arrival, we were welcomed by the GM, Director of Rooms, and Duty Manager, and personally escorted to our room—a beautiful duplex suite with Lumpini Park views.

Living Room of BT Bangkok's PS

We skipped lunch and instead went for their high tea, then stepped out to a nearby mall recommended by our chauffeur for some family shopping. Back at the hotel, we joined the evening cocktail hour, where they had an impressive spread and even arranged special meals for our dietary needs. Instead of heading straight to dinner, we strolled around Lumpini Park and later made our way to our much-awaited dinner at Vertigo & Moon Bar.

The city skyline from there? Unreal. Though we were too full for a heavy meal, we had a few small bites and enjoyed the view. One sweet touch—they clicked our picture and gave us a printed copy with Banyan Tree branding. In today’s digital world, holding a physical photo felt so nostalgic—like flipping through a real album.

Bangkok's Skyline from BT Bangkok's Moon Bar & Vertigo

Day 13 began after a restful night. Post breakfast, our car was ready to take us to the airport for our next destination. The GM personally came to bid us farewell, sharing the exciting news that a new Banyan Tree property is coming up right next to this one—likely even more premium! We promised to return soon. While both stays in Bangkok were lovely, Banyan Tree’s hospitality stood out, and it’s a clear recommendation from me.

Day 13–14: Phuket:

After staying at two incredible hotels, we reached Bangkok airport in about 40 minutes. When dropped at airport, there were people from Banyan Tree Bangkok to help us with our check-in process. Post check-in, we relaxed at the Miracle Lounge—small but functional, with some light bites before our flight to Phuket via Thai Airways.

Airport Drop by BT's own Chauffer Driven car

The flight was on time, and soon we landed in Phuket where our chauffeur awaited us. It took around 1.5 hours to reach Avista Hideaway Patong amidst a gentle drizzle.

Tucked away from the buzz of Patong Beach, the hotel lives up to its name with serene views from the lobby. Though I booked the base room, thanks to my Accor Platinum status, we were upgraded to the Hideaway Villa—spacious but sadly with no view. Honestly, I’d prefer their Pool Access rooms next time. We skipped the in-house Indian restaurant Tambu (a Michelin Guide mention!) and dined instead at the all-day dining venue, filled with friendly Indian staff—felt like a warm hug from home.

Lobby Area of Avista Hideaway Patong

Post dinner, we caught the last hotel shuttle to Patong Beach. The drop-off was near a mall, from where we walked past the vibrant Bangla Road to reach the beach. Even late at night, it was buzzing. We dipped our feet in the sea under a full moon peeking through the clouds—pure magic. That wrapped up our day, although we’d initially planned to stay 3 nights, a last-minute detour awaited.

Patong Beach

Day 14 began with our checkout and transfer to Krabi, arranged by Sofitel Krabi—and the best part? We settled it using points.

Day 14–16: Krabi:

Though Krabi was initially a “next time” destination, we decided to make it happen now—and oh, we’re glad we did! The drive was absolutely stunning, winding through coastal roads and lush hills. We reached Sofitel Krabi where I had booked their Imperial Suite at a great rate for two nights.

We were welcomed at Club Millésime by our butler, who also surprised us with complimentary 25-minute spa vouchers—a thoughtful touch! After a quick trip planning session with their helpful travel desk, we were escorted to our suite—and what a beauty! Two private balconies, panoramic views, and elegant Thai-Colonial design elements everywhere. Not to mention, Sofitel Krabi boasts Thailand’s largest pool—truly impressive.

One of the two Balconies of Imperial Suite of Sofitel Krabi

We grabbed lunch at the poolside restaurant and then headed for our spa session. If Banyan Tree KL’s spa is our top pick, this one comes very close. Although sessions were slightly shorter (80 mins instead of 90), the experience was deeply relaxing.

View attachment IMG_6550.mp4

Back in our suite, we caught a spectacular sunset before heading to their Italian restaurant Venezia—where we had possibly the best pepperoni pizza ever. Their Tuscan chef knows his craft! We ended the night with cocktails and live music at the Explorer Bar, with excellent vocals setting the mood. Returning to our suite with turndown service already done felt like home.

Pizza at Italian restaurant

Day 15 started early with breakfast, as we were off for the famous 4 Island Trip. Though it was booked as a group tour, we were the only ones, and the hotel still didn’t cancel—service at its finest. However, our boat faced an issue after 15 mins to the first stop, and guess what? We were upgraded to a private boat and were transferred from one boat to another in the middle of the ocean—quite an experience!

Private Trip boat of Sofitel Krabi

We cruised past Railey Beach, then stopped at Ko Poda Island to dip a bit—white sand, crystal clear water, pure bliss. Do note: the washrooms use salty water and aren't the cleanest, so best carry fresh water. Next was Chicken Island, more of a snorkeling stop, though we didn’t swim due to waves. We enjoyed our pre-selected lunch in the boat here before moving on to Tup and Mor Islands, uniquely connected by a sandbar when the tide is low. Walking across it felt surreal.

Tup & Mor Island

After 3+ hours of island-hopping, we returned, took a dip in the grand pool, and headed for light bites at the all-day dining restaurant. To our surprise, the Indian chef sent us a beautiful fruit platter—such a kind gesture!

Pool of Sofitel Krabi

Later, over coffee at the lounge, we remembered the spa vouchers. We went in without an appointment and they still managed to squeeze us in, even extending the service a bit—because, let’s be honest, 25 minutes isn’t enough! After the spa, we took a peaceful walk to the beach to catch the sunset. It was golden, quiet, and deeply moving. For the first time, we didn’t feel sad that the trip was ending—we just felt grateful.

View attachment IMG_6577.mp4

Dinner was, of course, a return to Venezia for our favourite pizza. A perfect ending to a perfect day.

Day 16 began slow and easy, thanks to a late check-out. We woke up late and just made it to breakfast. Skipped lunch to try the in-house ice cream parlour—delicious and fun. After a bit of rest, our car was ready to take us to the airport. It was a 45-minute drive, and we reached well ahead of time. Krabi Airport is small but smooth, and we loved the cozy Pearl Executive Lounge.

Airport Drop car of Sofitel Krabi

Soon, we were on our way home via Thai Airways with a Bangkok connection. At The Coral Finest Business Lounge in BKK, we grabbed cocktails and light bites. It was a bit crowded, but still a good spot to unwind before the final flight.

We finally boarded, full of memories, joy, and contentment. After months of planning, this trip unfolded just as we hoped—with a perfect landing in Kolkata, my home.

If you’ve read this far—thank you. I hope you enjoyed reading as much as I did reliving it.

Amazing trip report! Though I have covered these places still loved reading it.

Why didn't you book Bangkok to Phuket Thai Airways via United miles?

a referral from another hotel got me 40% off the Presidential Suite without even asking, it is proof that genuine connections can open doors you never expect.

How does this work? I talk well with the manager or someone at hotel during the stay but then I return home and that's it. How do you keep connections?

Thanks for your kind words.

Actually that leg was added later. We didn’t have plan for Bangkok at first. We booked for Phuket. Then changed to Bangkok, and later changed Krabi as exit. Thus didn’t waste further points and booked them in revenue, as they were pretty inexpensive.

For keeping the connection part, it’s rare, and very few can stay connected for a long time. We both share common interests, so we stayed connected. We both share travel plans with each other and talk about hotels. So that worked. But at the end, never make connection with an agenda unless you’re a travel advisor, who would need them anyway.

Planning part of ur trip, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai & Bangkok, flights on united with excursionist perks.

That's great! But I'd suggest not to go with Villa at Avista Hideaway. It's quite darker. Get the pool access rooms, will save your points + view will be epic
