VI scam: Asking payment after sim closure

The story started two years ago, when I had to move to the UK for a year. Since I still needed my Indian number for OTPs, I went to a Vodafone Idea store. They told me the only way to keep the SIM active was to take their family postpaid plan with an additional SIM, so I had no choice but to agree.

After a year, when I returned to India, I faced endless issues with VI and decided to port out. The process was a nightmare—constant calls, messages, and even outright denials of my port request. Finally, one helpful customer care agent explained that the two SIMs were linked, and I needed to unlink them before porting. To make matters worse, the second SIM had already been deactivated, yet I was still being charged postpaid fees for it.

So I went back to the VI store, reactivated the first SIM, asked them to close it, and then successfully ported the second one to Jio. I thought that was the end of it.

But now, six months later, I’ve started receiving emails from VI about “unpaid bills.” Turns out, the store never actually closed the other SIM as they promised. They’ve even gone as far as sending me legal notices by email.

Honestly, it feels like the biggest scam. I’m just glad VI is on its way out of business.
