Malaysian Airline cancelled connecting flight from kuala lampur to Denpasar

My wife and I were traveling to Bali and found ourselves stranded at Mumbai airport when our connecting flight from Kuala Lumpur (KL) to Denpasar (DPS) was canceled due to a volcanic eruption in Indonesia, approximately 600 miles from Bali. Initially, the airline was not allowing passengers to board the Mumbai to KL flight. However, some travelers with different onward connections from KL successfully argued with the airline. Along with 18 other passengers, we chose not to board the flight to KL since there was no certainty about when the affected flight would resume operations. Now, the airline is denying a refund for our tickets. I have a travel insurance policy with Reliance General Insurance that includes clauses for trip delays and flight cancellations. I would appreciate suggestions on how to secure a full refund and possibly claim compensation for our Bali trip, as I will only be receiving a partial refund from the hotels and scheduled activities/experiences, causing significant disruption to our entire vacation

@drsel , @BVC and others, please help our comrade.
Thanks

Send mail to claims department of reliance to ask for procedure, documents and forms which needs to be given for claim.
My parents had flight delay and baggage delay issue, had gone through veena world group tour so they had facilitated the claim process. (Though my parents didn't apply for claim, some people had applied and got amount). 3rd party asego had issued icici travel insurance.

Tough to be in situation like that. Approach reliance insurance claim section. They should help you with the claim process.

If the Airline denied boarding, it has to refund. If you didn't wanted to board, it will be treated as No show. Please raise an compliant with Air Sewa and ask compensation from Airlines.

Airlines can give the boarding pass with rerouted flight when you land in transit airport.

If connecting flight is cancelled then another flight or refund should be provided by airline. In your case, you should take flight to KL and then reschedule your next flight or ask for refund.
If no flight for DPS is there, then you need to book tkt to your next destination (leisure trip) using refunded amount.

Insurance company will not give the refund, if flight is not cancelled officially on airline website. In your case, KL->DPS is cancelled not BOM -> KL flight. So insurance can be claimed for 2nd sector.
