IDFC First Bank Sends Notices and Purges Reward Points: Understanding the Situation [Solved By IDFC First Bank]

On April 22, 2024, IDFC First Bank sent an email notification to many of their debit card users, indicating that the customers seemed to have violated the bank's terms of use of the First Reward program, and as a result, reward points earned in FY 23-24 would be purged. The bank also mentioned, "The Debit Card(s) have been issued to you for the purpose of personal/retail purchases within the prescribed usage limit assigned to you. Repeated violations may even lead to the termination of your Debit Card Membership with us."

Wow! It seems IDFC First Bank is the first bank to introduce limits for debit cards. I used to think that banks only assign limits to credit cards. To clarify, I would say that the bank doesn't assign any limit to debit card usage; the debit card has a daily limit, and that's it. One can spend unlimited money using their debit card as long as they have money in their linked bank account.

Let's clarify the problem for everyone.

IDFC First Bank introduced their debit card reward system back in July 2023, almost one year ago. Initially, they were offering reward points on all spends, with no restrictions on any MCC and category, and no capping on the maximum reward points one can earn.

Now, what happened is that people tried to find ways to spend money. Some people paid their factory electricity bills and other business-related expenses with credit cards and paid the card bill using the IDFC First Bank debit card. Some people loaded Paytm wallets (their own, family members', and maybe friends' wallets) using the IDFC First Bank debit card and transferred that money to their bank account.

Now, IDFC First Bank can question those customers about their spends, money trail, etc., but purging last FY reward points just by saying they have used loopholes or lacunas to take advantage of the bank's reward system is something I strongly oppose.

A few questions to IDFC First Bank:
  1. Why didn't you restrict some MCC or categories from your reward system?
  2. Why didn't you introduce a fair use policy at the start?
  3. Why are you calling this "misused or abusively used to take advantage of loopholes or lacunas"? When does loading Paytm become abuse? When does paying a credit card bill become abuse?
  4. What do you mean by "usage limit assigned to you"? Have you mentioned the assigned limit for each debit card on your website? As far as I know, this term is invalid for a debit card, as the bank doesn't assign any maximum fair use limit to a debit card. And no one can use their debit card to spend more than the daily limit the card has in a day.
I think IDFC First Bank should plan well before launching their products. Although they first launched their debit card reward program in Feb 2023, they removed the reward portal page within a few days and relaunched it in July 2023. So why didn't the reward program team plan well to stop such abuse (in your language)? You could have restricted a few MCCs and introduced a fair use policy just like you did for your credit cards recently. This action is like "Khud galti karo, phir uska blame customer pe daal do".

Now, the main question is, what action should affected customers take?
I suggest affected customers send an email to IDFC First Bank addressing the questions I have mentioned above. Let them provide answers, and if the issue is not resolved in your favor, file a complaint with the RBI ombudsman. Let the RBI ombudsman department decide what's wrong and what's right.

Update on 24th april, 2024:
IDFC First Bank replied to my tweet and apologized. They also shared that only 272 customers were affected, but they will not purge reward points from their account. I'm really impressed with IDFC First Bank for listening to customer feedback.

Update:
IDFC First Bank has started sending emails to affected customers, informing them that the last action was taken in error.

First Axis and now IDFC. All these banks first launch an unsustainable reward rate and then revoke points citing business usage🤦‍♂️. They should not launch something they can't fulfill. Add limits and exclusions, of that's what is needed. Even Block transactions if necessary. But revoking points is just reducing the bank's credibility.

IMO very ridiculous step from IDFC. Like you pointed out, they should have designed their product properly. Now these incompetent ppl are making customers pay for their mistakes.

Seems they are not even allowing customer to justify their spends (like Axis did with their Atlas cards). IDFC is turning out to be worse than Axis (never thought i would say this). Very incompetent product team and thankfully I did not open account with them!
This is exactly why I didn't open an account with them either. My customer service experience was very terrible for the IDFC credit card that I've been using and they're hopeless.

Hi Sumanta, I work at IDFC FIRST Bank. I brought this to the attention of our senior management. They said this should never have been done by the concerned official, we don't support this and asked the concerned division to immediately rectify this. There were only 272 customers for whom this communication was sent. Reward points for all 272 customers will continue to be active. We are building a world class bank, and ethical banking is our foundation stone. Purging past earned rewards points is not fair according to us. We sincerely apologize and thank you once again for bringing this to our notice.

Keep up the great work, Kuvam! I believe I received a WhatsApp call from an IDFC First Bank employee. I missed it because I'm in Bali. I sincerely apologize for not being able to pick up the call.

Good IDFC bank which is rapidly expanding is listening to their customers. Other banks need to adapt this.

@Kuvam Nothing to comment on?
- Total Freeze/ Debit Freeze on UPI txns or sth else, severe algorithm issues
- UPI limit is ₹25,000/ txn instead 1 lac
- UPI ID is mandatorily, phone number @idfc, instead customisation of alpha and others
- Add money has only UPI as option
- Signature cannot be updated online

Haven't you received an email for the same? Is there something concrete, if you have received share that too.

Don't know how IDFC works, without discussion/ solid decision from concerned department, how mail was sent to reportedly 272 customers?

As per the reply, IDFC First Bank's senior management directed the concerned department to rectify the issue, so we should wait for some time.

Check your account, someone informed me that his reward first account is working now and he just redeemed his points.

Well I've to say this is the difference in aukad between IDFC and a company like SBI Cards who forfeits reward points like crazy at the end of the year long after it has erroneously given them. They have no ethics, no morals and feel no responsibility towards customers. Bas dhanda karna hai types company.
