These aggregators bridge the gap between the banks and airport lounges and offer free lounge access benefits to the banks' credit cardholders.

How It Works: Via Card Network or Via Aggregator Company

Banks can offer free airport lounge access using two methods:

Via Card Network: When using the "Via Card Network" method, banks purchase bulk free lounge visits from the card network associated with the credit card. For instance, if your credit card network is Visa, the bank would already have a tie-up with Visa for issuing their credit cards. Visa, in turn, partners with various airport lounges worldwide. The bank pays a per-visit fee to Visa and extends free airport lounge access to its customers.​

Via Aggregator Company: In the "Via Aggregator Company" approach, banks directly tie-up with an aggregator such as PriorityPass or Dreamfolks. These aggregators connect the banks with airport lounges across the world. In this case, the bank pays a per-visit fee to the aggregator company, which, in turn, purchases lounge visits in bulk from the actual airport lounge providers, ultimately granting customers free airport lounge access.​

Are They Really Free?
In both cases, the bank covers the cost of providing free airport lounge access to its customers. While cardholders enjoy the benefits of complimentary lounge access, the bank bears the expense. The per-visit charges vary based on the bank's negotiation power and location. For instance, if you were to access airport lounges in India without a credit card offering this benefit, you might pay anywhere from Rs. 800 to Rs. 2500, depending on the location.

However, for banks, this rate is significantly cheaper than the regular public rate. Banks usually pay between Rs. 200 to 1000 per visit, depending on the location and their negotiation power. The fact is, banks subsidize the cost to offer this attractive perk to their customers.

The Increasing Burden on Banks:
As air traffic continues to rise, offering free lounge access has become a financial challenge for banks. They are spending substantial amounts of money to provide lounge access to their customers. Many customers who don't spend much using their credit cards still enjoy the free lounge benefit, leading to no income generation for the bank. Consequently, banks now ask customers to meet specific spending criteria within a given time frame before availing free lounge access. For instance, IDFC First Bank lifetime free credit card customers can only avail free airport lounge benefits if they spend Rs. 5000 in the previous month.

In response to the increasing costs, some card issuers have been compelled to remove free lounge access benefits from certain credit cards. For instance, SBI Card removed lounge access benefits from their SBI cashback credit card to cut down expenses.

The Impact on Aggregator Companies:
One such aggregator company, Dreamfolks, has seen remarkable growth due to increasing air traffic and more banks tying up with them for complimentary lounge access benefits, airport meet and greet, airport spa and airport transfers. In 2021, their total operational revenue was Rs. 105.63 crore, which surged to Rs. 282.49 crore in 2022—an impressive 167% increase. Almost 98% of their operational revenue comes from lounge fees charged to their partner banks.

While this indicates that more customers are using free airport lounge access, leading to increased revenue for aggregator companies like Dreamfolks, it also poses a financial challenge for banks due to rising expenses. However, this also indicates that the number of credit card users in india are increasing rapidly, and this is ultimately beneficial for credit card issuers.

The fact that the lounge may see very few patrons if the tie up with banks breaks, makes the deal lucrative for the lounge operator.
1) Minimum costs negotiated with the banks is better than keeping the lounge empty.
2) Produce food at a greater scale, this means cost of production comes down. For stuff like Paratha, Dosa, etc (Time and effort consuming) - live counter with 1 person is provided. Most folks avoid this due to the rush. -Economics of scale at work here.
3) Always stay in demand. The line outside some lounges is larger than the check in counters. This makes people intrigued and opt for cards.
4) Sales pitch 80% done - Customer believes what he sees - Banks like SBI/Axis have counters right opposite to the lounge entrance to entice the customers. Promise of free lounge access during next visit seals the deal.
