It is indeed reference to the time of starting the Amex relationship, it indicates the year when you first became a member , It's a very unique Amex thing to make the members feel valued and also helps Amex to track the members history, even if the card is replaced the 'Membership Since' date will remain the same,
For cards issued directly by Amex. And their current state does not resonate with the idea of making members "feel valued" apart from typing the vintage of the card membership.
Infact this was first thing told to me I started working for Amex( indirectly though), but was not aware they do it for cards partnered with other Banks
Bank cards work on bank terms, not amex. They only manage payments.

Moreover, the AmEx's Member Since year does NOT show the very first relationship with AmEx. It is for only the current relationship and for that particular card variant.

Earlier - during 1995 to 2003, my last AmEx card was a Green card. Later, I had surrendered it. Now, in 2023, when I took their MRCC card, it does NOT show the earlier year in that Member Since place. It shows only the current/latest card's starting year which is 23.

Recently I entered Encalm Lounge in Delhi Airport Terminal 1. There was separate counter for Amex and Diners cards. I used my DCB to enter within 5 mins whereas there was a huge queue in the standard lines. Whether these Amex Network cards will also be given preference in lounges or they have to stand in normal queue?

Naah.. They're treated as bank cards only.

In my case I got SmartEarn card in early 2023 and they upgraded to MRCC in late 2023 and then to Platinum Travel in mid 2024. But even in my Platinum Travel card the membership year was since 2023. Maybe it is because the card account was same. Only the card variant was getting upgraded. In your case, there was a gap of 20 years so they might have created a new card account.

Maybe 2008 transition led to this change in your case Sir. I started card membership with Amex in 2016 in India and my 9 Amex cards (4 IN, 2 UK and 3 US) have 2016 as the member since date.
